Duplicolor paint shop??? pics added 10/31

Post by Brian339 »

I was trying to clean up the paint on my truck with some polish when I started thinking, I would really like a fresh paint job. Its got some chips and scratches but its otherwise straight. So I said screw it. I went and bought a DA sander and ripped into the paint. I have always wanted to paint a car but I am not set up for it. I did some research on this duplicolor paint shop. Its not the best or most durable but it is user friendly. I spent about 12 hours of serious sanding and covering. Today I shot the primer. It wss tough just like I read in my research.
I will sand it tomorrow with 400 and I plan to shoot the base tomorrow. I have read that it needs at least 4 coats of clear if you plan on wet sanding and buffing. I am the type who like to polish my paint often. I am planning 8-10 coats of clear. I want it as tough as I can get it and while the carr is masked of I may as well.

Anyone else used this product? How did it work out. I will post progress pictures as I go.

My first paint job is complete. I am in the process of wet sanding and polishing. I have learned do much from this experience. If there are any inspiring driveway painters you can do this but let me make a couple of quick points.
1. Its not cheap, dont be fooled. I spent $400 on primer, base coat and clear coat. I did 7 coats of clear to allow for alot of polishing.
2. I bought a cup gun. You should buy an hvlp as it uses less paint.
3. I also spent over 50 hours of hard work. If you want to do this expect to work long and hard.

Pictures will be up soon when I have the time. You will be amazed.

I got pictures and finally some spare time. I used the mtallic mid coat which looks amazing in the sun. Its a beautiful paint job. I really laid the paint on. 4 coats or primer, 4 coats of performance red, 1 coat of metallic clear mid coat and around 7-8 coats of clear. I put so many coats of clear in anticipation of wet sanding and polishing. I did my homework. I read plenty about this product. Plenty of negative opinions on it and I cannot dismiss all of it. I can say this though having done a successful job using this product, if you want to do it yourself and do it in your driveway as I did, this product works. You will only get out of it what you put into it. I will tell you what I put into it.
$600 in all materials which includes tape, sandpaper, Lowes cup gun kit($50) paint ($400) one package of 15 discs of 3m trizact 3000 wet sandpaper which I highly recommend 2 discs of 5000 3m trizact wet sandpaper discs havent used them yet but no doubt will make my paint job shine like glass and a few other minor things like a gallon of acetone. I am a painting contractor (residential) so I have a good filter mask which you will need or you will poison yourself.
The entertainment and pleasure of doing this is well worth it. Its a job I can be proud of. I am sure you could easily do a better more durable job with something other than this lacquer product but not likely successfully in your driveway. I must also add that this whole process left minimal mess on my driveway. I could keep writing but I have said enough for now I think.

Please ask me some questions if your considering doing it I am more than happy to share my experience.

looks good. I am also doing body work out in the open. I keep it covered when not working on it. It stays dry with a good tarp. I'm doing all my priming in the yard but when comes to paint i plan on the use of a friends shop

I'll probably have to paint it outside, like you. My biggest concern is overspray. If I get green paint on the tires, no biggie. If I get green paint on the wife's blue Camry, I might be living in the truck for a while!

By the way, it looks great. Thanks for the photos.

Thanks for the compliments. I still got another 3-4 hours of wet sanding with the 3m 5000 trizact wet sand discs I bought on ebay and some finish polishing. Looks finished but after doing that it should look showroom.
