steering box removal,
Ok I finally finished installing the rag joint on my truck just to find power steering fluid pouring out of the spline seal where the rag joint hooks on to,
My Question,
Is the steering box hard to remove?
How does it come off, whats all involved?
can I rebuild myself or does it have to be sent out?
Is that just a seal where that spline goes into steering box?
thanks For the help in advance..
Greg

Re: steering box removal,
pretty easy - 3 bolts that attach it to the frame... One end has the rag joint and on the other end leave the pitman arm on the pump and take off the nut that holds the pitman arm to the drag link.

Re: steering box removal,
as far as rebuilding it i wouldnt try unless you know how to put it back together. replacing the seal should be easy enough though.

Re: steering box removal,
So what do you do if you DO rip it? Is it replaceable? If so, where do you get them? I've done it many times on many different vehicles and applications and seems like I ALWAYS damage it in some way. I was going to buy a tie rod/pitman arm puller set so I wouldn't this next time around.forrestbump wrote:390bump wrote: Be careful to NOT tear or rip the rubber boot if you can. Re: steering box removal,
Randy,
I personally use a ball joint separator just so that I don't tear the rubber cups. I only recommended the pickle fork because it's more readily available and less expensive.
I've never been able to find a source for the rubber boots only for tie rod ends, so when I'm bone yarding, I take my ball joint separator with me to take apart tie rod ends to get at the rubber boots. Usually the yards let me have them for free.
If you need any, I've got quite a few "left-overs".

Re: steering box removal,
So they just pop off and pop on? I'll be removing my front suspension, hopefully, this weekend. The drag link is the one I'm most concerned about. Need to pull it in good condition. Those boogers are expensive!

Yup!! If you're pulling them apart this weekend, spray PB Blaster on all your tie rod ends now so they'll be ready...sargentrs wrote:So they just pop off and pop on?

Re: steering box removal,
I've been called that before when I talk about my truck.
PB stuff is PB Blaster. It's in a yellow and black spray can with the WD40 at your local parts store. http://www.pbblaster.com Works better than WD 40 on heavily rusted bolts, IMHO.

Re: steering box removal,
PB Blaster is what we all drink at the end of Long, Tough, Day... nothin' like popin' the top on a tall cold PB Blaster... hmmmm!
Sorry, couldn't help myself Greg.
... but seriously... PB Blaster is like WD40 on Viagra! It'll penetrate into a lot of things that WD40 just can't (well at least NOT as fast). Stuff works Great!
You can buy 12oz aerosol cans at places like NAPA.
Be sure you get it in the six pack, ice cold... there I go again...
