final sanding grit?

a good sanding with 400 should be just right from what I know about it.

400 is cool, but your best bet is to ask what the paint shop prefers, give them a call.

i thought the final goal of body work was to get it as smooth as possible for paint

hello,
Ryan, yes you do want it smooth and uniform, but it needs to have some grit to it for adhesion, some paints need a rougher grit to stick.
Example............ some urethane basecoats like 800 grit while some synthetic hybrids like Omni AU will blow off in sheets if not sanded in at least 600.
400 wet is a good grit for just about any paint.
But no matter what, keep the painter happy and do as he requests.
