Front end question

Post by ratfink »

I hope this is not too stupid of a question.
My front tires are kicked in at the top causing wear on the inside of the tires.
My question is if the front springs were sagging badly, would that cause this to happen?
Thanks, Ratfink

Yep, that's what is going on. The I-beams can get bent, causing the same problem, but it's not as likely as the springs being worn out. It's also much more difficult to find a place that can rebend them, properly (without using heat)

Replacing the springs should straighten it out, just remember the right and left springs are different, due to the offset of the engine (not a lot of offset, but enough to make a difference).

i could be the springs. it could also be the king pins. jack up the truck and check the slop in the king pins by trying to move the tire in and out at the top and bottom of the tire. if it has slop then the king pins are wore out.

isnt it a misconception that camber causes tire wear? if its not completely off the ground, its other things (toe) that cause most of the tire wear. The part of your tire on the ground wears out just as if it was fulkly on the ground, but of course the part not touching the ground does wear, which gives it uneven wear, but i wouldnt say premature.

the toe is where all the tread is getting torn off. atleast this is how i understand it and have been told by quite a few good suspension people.

I thought it was the springs because I had it up on a lift last week and really gave it a good going over.
Thanks for all of the input.

Be sure to check the toe. Excessive toe out will cause the front end to squat and feather edging of the tire tread. Feel the tread on the front tires and if it is smooth side to side then likely the cause is spring sag (excessive negative camber). If you feel that the tread lugs have a higher edge then it likely a toe problem. If you need springs I found that Napa could get the ones for my '68 F-250 and maybe they could get yours too.
