Replacing factory Steering Wheel 69 F100

Post by Macdaddy »

Thinking about replacing factory steering wheel with aftermarket wheel (Grant probably) anybody had any luck with a direct bolt on and still use factory turnsignal set-up? I just purchased a used 15" 3 spoke F series wheel off of ebay, it fits but will not work with current factory turn signal set-up...

why wont it work with your turn signal setup? it should unless the cancel cam nub has been removed from your steering wheel.

not sure what year the wheel came off of, but the entire hub is about an inch in diameter bigger then factory 69 f100, also the nub for the cancel cam is not there and i dont see a hole where it would have been..

whoever told you a 3 spoke came off a 79 F100 is wrong. unless that is a typo. and you meant 1970 F100

by the sounds of it being too large around. it probably came off of a larger truck. the 3 spoke wheels werent used in F100-F250 trucks past 1970. i am unsure about F350. but i think the same 1970 cut off is the same. however the 78/79 steering wheels are larger around at the base.

one way to tell what size of truck it came off of is the deepness of the dish of the spokes of the wheel. the larger the truck the less of a dish the steering wheel will have.

As far as putting an after market wheel on like a Grant steering wheel, as long as you buy the correct adaptor for your steering column and steering wheel your turn signals will work. That is if they were working before.

turn signals work fine...the ebay seller says the wheel came off a 1979 F100 Official Pace Truck, what ever that is...you never know with ebay! its 15" diameter, black leather factory wrap and 3 black rally spokes with Ford center horn cap...

Im hoping to get the wheel closer to the dash by at least an inch...does the horn work with all original factory guts and the adapter kit?

It is shallower and smaller diameter than the factory wheel. I think it works great. The buckets in my truck sit a little high, but in my other 67 with the bench, it was really nice. Between the hardware that comes with the wheel and the mounting kit you buy for your application, everything works. The wood wheel stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter as well. My wife bought me that wheel in 2000 and I have put it in 3 different 67s.

The price on that sport wheel is only good if it is a correct one, there are two different kinds. It is easy to tell the difference because the wrong one does not have any horn contacts on the back side. Those are the two round rings that the horn brushes run against. These wheels originally came out on Pinto's and Mustang II's (that is why they are so small!) and then were used later on several Ford cars and finally when the truck steering column changed in 78 they became an option on the truck as well. The early ones came in a few versions, they can be chrome or blcak and they can be padded or leather wrapped. The chrome leather combo is by far the most valuable. Starting in 79 Ford also used this design steering wheel on the Fox design Mustangs but the Fox chassis cars used a horn button that was part of the turn signal switch so they eliminated the horn contacts on the steering wheel and the backside of those wheels is smooth except for the wheel lock hub. The Mustang crowd does not seem to care much for these and I think it is because Ford realized that the turn signal mounted horn just sucked and changed it so many Mustang guys just change their turn signal switches to the later one and use a steering wheel mounted horn (I know I did!). The earlier version of the wheel with the horn contacts can be worth quite a bit of money as are the horn buttons themselves which break easily and are very hard to get. Hawkrod
