So what's correct here...

Post by layedout72 »

I bought brake lines from O'reilleys and the pass side went on fine, a little rigging but it will be fine. The driver side is completely different... pics below

the gold is obviously the new one...

That new one is the wrong one. It looks like they gave you the one for your rear axle. Take it back.

well, why does it work on the front passenger side? probably because it's not correctly done either huh? it has a bracket for the ring to clip onto, and a hard line bent to fit from that to the wheel cylinder. The soft line goes to the bracket of course. So are both wrong, will the one I have on the pass side work? Dangerous or no? The hardline is in good shape, just don't know if the flow is too restricted or what.

If i remember right there was a change in the front wheel cylinders somewhere around '72.
Before this change the front brake hose threaded directly into the wheel cylinder, like the old line you took off.
After this change you get the hard line from the wheel cylinder, to a mounting bracket and then the soft line to the frame.

It sounds like you have one of each on the front of this truck, one pre '72 style and one post '72 style.
If you are going to continue to stay with front drum brakes for any extended period of time i would advise you to get two of the later style brake line/hardware set ups for the front. That way you have matching lines to the year of your truck.

How did this happen????

Both the wheel cylinders are the same fit dimensions. So you can bolt the pre'72 into the backing plate for the post'72. However, you would have to remove the hard line and mounting bracket to get the pre'72 soft brake line to work.

I have noticed this may only be true for F-100 series trucks.

I recently saw a '68 F-350 that had the post'72 style brake lines, and fittings. I'm pretty sure it was original, the last date of registration on the tags were 1981.

Best of luck to you, hope i haven't made it worse.
Oh yeah, that brake line from Rock Auto would be the right one.

okay, so i need to get a small amount of hardline. Do I need to get a longer piece, cut it, and double flare it? Is this my only option, or is there a chance of them having what I need? And if I go to the parts house, what am I asking for other than the brake hose I need (which I have)? Do I need to get a bracket? Would they have it?

That old hose in the 1st picture looks like the hoses that were on the 77 disc brake axle.

so i if i want it with the bracket and hard line, what am I asking for at the parts store? Or do I need to do it like the old lines? Because the driver side doesnt have "studs" it has bolts, but I guess I could still get the bracket on there if I go with the hardline...

Here are a couple of extra pictures, just for the visual.

Here's the style that threads directly into the brake cylinder:

...and here's the style with the mounting bracket and hard line:

I actually kinda doubt the local parts store is going to have that hard line and bracket...but then again I've been surprised at times at what's been available. It certainly doesn't hurt to ask. You might just have to get those items from a junkyard truck or post something in the Parts Wanted section here, and I'm sure someone could get those from their parts trucks.

right on, I will post on the forum. Would much rather give money to a forum member, and all the parts stores here have are parts numbers and people to read them. They don't know about these old trucks so they are of no help normally.
