Axle Pivot Bushings

I searched and searched but couldnt find a thread on this topic. Whats the best way to change out the axle pivot bushings on a 67? I've pulled and prodded but the things wont budge, this isnt something I will have to have pressed out and in is it?

yes pressing it out is the best way, you might be able to do w/ axle in truck and big C clamp. A air hammer with a blunt bit might do the trick as well.

It's the bushing where the I-Beam connects to the frame....2 wheel drive.

yes arbor press would work. if you take it a shop they can press them out and the new ones in

I just hate taking the whole thing in and asking them to press out that bushing with the spindal and everything hanging on it (cause I aint going to wrestle with that king pin.)

well you have a torch? melt them out or enought where you can get then out with a hammer. put the news ones in the frezzer and ste the beam in the sun where they can get hot. they will go in easier

What kind of shape is the king-pin in? If the axle pivot is worn out, I can guarantee the king-pin is too, if it's not been replaced.

It's notoriously expensive to get mechanical stuff done around here, but having the pivot bushing swapped out for me only cost me $60.00. Worth it to me, cuz I spent all the time I WOULD have spent working on them, working on other things.

I have one of those little handheld butane torches, but I suppose that would do if all I was doing was removing a bushing.

Yeah, just bite the bullet and take it to a machine shop. I dropped mine off at 9am and picked up at noon. Got the king pins done too. You might as well so you don't have to bother again for 40 years.

You can also drill out the rubber on the old bushings, and then bend/pry the bushing shells out. Then you can use a long bolt, nut and a couple of large washer to pull the new bushings in.

However, it's a lot of work...I'll second (third?) the suggestion of just dropping it off at the machine shop. And I also agree to getting the kingpins replaced while you've got everything down that far. Be honest...do you think you'll ever have the front-end tore down this far again in the future? Get it done now and keep it greased up, and they'll outlast the rest of the truck. Just my
