Used suspension parts

Post by FLATBEDFORD »

I'm taking the '67 F350's stripped frame to the scrapyard this week. I left the front suspension on it. Does anybody think its worth the trouble to remove and keep the suspension parts, and if so, which ones?

Tie rods and center link if not worn since we have to buy ones that are not true now days. The I-beams no replacements available and then the steering box even if worn makes for a 125 core.

The steering box is a newer power unit, I've got that off already. How the heck do I get those joints apart for the tie rods and center link?

Either with a pickle-fork or a tie-rod separator:

If you don't have the separator that Fordification suggests, try hitting the drag link on the side with a hammer right where the tie rod bolt goes through. Then hit the bolt right on the top. Sometimes the hit on the side will jar it loose.

as dcbullet aid hit the casting, with a big hammer, after removing the nut.
but never the threaded part. its not worth damaging the threads.
if you strike the side of the joint it will pop the joint every time. :2cents:

and never use pickle forks on good joints, they are for worn parts removal only, they do more harm than good. they damage the boots, and crush the sides of the joints.

:yt: Exactly what I was going to say. I ruined good tie rod ends on a Dakota once, with a pickle fork. My father in-law showed me the sledge trick and it works every time.

Flatbed,

Save the old springs too!

They make good "kiddie rides" for the kids or grandkids! Used to see them all over in parks attached to the ground with animal figurines attached to them. I also made my kids a "see-saw" out of old front spindles!

Redneck ingenuity is a scary thing!

funny

i haven't ever had a hard time with a pickle fork. i may have messed up the boot once in a while. but those can be gotten new if you need them. i have had more trouble with pullers sliding off the side of things and messing up threads on things.

Same here. Though I have a pickle fork that is too narrow and it gets stuck on the rod ends. No problem though the Fork is softer metal than the rod end so the end doesn't get hurt.
