i'm talking abouit the busted up puller going to the trash beacuse it wont do the job correctly. i wouldn't start calling names if i were you. you don't know me at all. so pm that if you want to fight about it. this is a place for opinoins not name calling. that must be why they fall out of the air so often.

i guess you did read the whole conversation. the guy said a few days ago he wasn't trying to remove the pitman from the box. just the draglink from the pitman. a tie rod end fork is better tool for doing that job than trying to get a puller up in there and then having to hit it. if he was tring to pull the pitman from the box then yes a puller is the recommended tool. it comes in from the bottom. I'm just going by what he had said.

I tryed using one of those pickle fork things and it didn't work. I used it on the truck I was removing the power steering box from and it messed up the seal for that grease thing. Not good with names.

Just think what the hammer blows to the pickle fork are doing to ball tracks inside the steering box. I think this reply is "name calling free".

re: Steering Box Removal Help
yea if your not careful you can damage that boot.
As far as damage to the ball it could but i doubt it would really hurt anything unless the ball and socket were in pretty bad shape any way. then it wouldn't matter if it were in that bad of shape. all your tring to do is seperate the wedging of the stem from the hole in the pitman. as long as you don't continue hitting it after you have contacted the stem. you should be fine. puller to me are a harder thing to work with. i have had them on and either ended up bending them or breaking them. i hate having to use them at times. other times they work real good in certain places.
i'm glad you got her off though. good job.

What should I torque the pitnam nut down to...I can't seem to find the torque setting in the manual and I don't want to over torque and cause a bind.beemer wrote: Do retorque the pitman nut after a few miles driving then check again in a week as the pitman will creap up the tapered splines and reduce the pitman nut torque.

oh boy, you guys are funny, its like a bunch of old ladys playing cards.
Not to ruffle any feathers but three jaw pullers suck, and pickle forks suck, you would be better off with a hammer.
A pitman puller is cheep like 20.00 and $30 for a impact gun puller and well worth the extra $10.

Don't mess with FM. He knows his shxx.
And for your info. I have busted pullers and knuckles, my own getting
pitman arms to come loose. Just keep fingers and stuff you want to keep
away from the puller. It can go "BANG" and it hurts, like really bad.
Keep some tequilla handy.

re: Steering Box Removal Help
Chilton's 65 to 72 manual for passenger cars (didn't show trucks) they spec 150 to 225 ft/lbs torque. I would bet this is a factory dry spline torque. I used 90 ft /lbs as anti-seize was used on the spline for future removal, even then with a 3 jaw puller took some effort.
Checked twice after install until 90 ft/lbs repeated. JMO's on above torque specs I used so your on your own. Haven't had a problem with over 36 years owning a 68 and 69 trucks. I must be careful as "I am watching" might not like specific torque numbers posted.
good luck.....=o&o>.....
