Steering Box Removal Help

Post by cghstrojan08 »

What do I need to do to take my power steering box off my 68 and put it on my 69? I already have the power steering pump hoses off. Also, how does the steering ar m attach to the box? Is it keyed, and do I remove the big bolt? Thanks!

Read this thread for steering box removal. This one applies to manual steering boxes, the only difference is you also have to disconnect two fluid hoses:

http://fordification.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14262

The Pitman arm, on the end of the steering box shaft, is pressed onto that splined shaft and held on with a large nut. Simply remove the nut and attach a large claw-type puller to remove it. You might have to apply some tension and then bang on it a few times, then apply some more tension, bang some more, repeat as necessary until it pops off. Here's a picture borrowed from the Steering/Suspension Component Variations tutorial:

I don't understand what your asking. You shouldn't have to remove the Pitman arm, since your PS box is a '69. It'll bolt right up to your '68 steering linkage. Just use the tierod puller to remove the '68 steering linkage end from the manual box's Pitman arm, replace the MS box (and Pitman arm) with the PS pieces.

from start to finish remove the bolt holding the rag joint to the box. remove the drag bar from the pitman arm. remove the hoses from the box. remove the three bolts through the frame from into the box. and have the strength to hold the box once it comes loose.

If you do remove the pitman arm, clean splines and apply anti-seize to them for easy removal later. Yes later will come up in time.
Do retorque the pitman nut after a few miles driving then check again in a week as the pitman will creap up the tapered splines and reduce the pitman nut torque. Anti-seize also on the tie rod end and drag link tapers.

I'm in the process of doing that now. How much trouble did you have?

It wasn't all that hard. I put a puller on the Pitman ar m and it still didn't want to budge. I had to give it a love tap. Make sure you have something to hold that gear box like tie it off to the hood or something. It can get really heavy when you have gotten mad and have been cussing at the box for a half-hour. Lucky for me though I had someone help me while I held onto the box while they gave it the love tap. Have fun.

Those pickle forks will work OK for tierods, but not for the Pitman arm. That requires a puller.

Pickle forks belong in [censored]. Once used on a tierod that joints heading to the trash. Never use one on the pitman as the sector thrust bearing will be destroyed, again you'll fill the trash can.
Use a big 3 jaw puller, anti-seize the splines before assembly.
