Dual battery setup question

Post by alvald83 »

I am running a dual battery setup in my '69 f250. I have an isolator between the starting battery and 92ah (group 27m) AGM camper battery. My question is, How do i keep it from overcharging while being charged by the alternator? Im using this AGM battery to power my camper LED lights and an inverter.
Thanks Al

Hi Al,
Since I‘m planing to build my own slide in camper I had some thoughts on the dual battery setup.
What about mounting a second alternator on the engine?
With this done, you will have two completely independent power circuits not affecting each other. You can use a one wire alternator with integrated regulator which will solve your overcharging problem. An external regulator will of course also work.

I‘ve no plan ready for mounting a second alternator but I can imagine that it could be somewhere, where the AC compressor would be if you haven‘t AC like me.

A alternator with a clutch in the pulley like the AC compressor has would be very awesome. In idea if something like this is available anywhere... :hmm:
