Windsor vs fe vs 460
Wanting to build a street truck with 4-500+hp on a somewhat reasonable budget. Either going with crew cab and Dana 60 or CV front and likely 9" rear.
Factors:
Gonna have fuel injection (megasquirt)
Gotta have manual overdrive transmission
Somewhat low maintenance
Not considered:
Gas mileage
Cost if within 25% of each other
Weight
This is a toy. I don't drive to work. It's not a need, it's a want. Nevermind, I need it.
I'd take a t56 magnum over a tko because it's only a couple hundred more, rated for 700 ft-lbs, and has an extra gear. I know somebody's going to suggest it.
I have a spare set of c1ae-a heads but I don't know if they'll get me there or not. If they will, I've got a head start. I've never ported before but I've got a few random heads that I can practice with to get an idea of whether or not I can do it. If anyone has pics of c1 cutaways or port molds, that would be fantastic. I wouldn't do that for any aftermarket heads. I'd either run them out of the box or pay a pro.
I'm still in the Intel gathering stage. Part purchases will hopefully begin before the end of next year. I understand this isn't going to be done for $800. I expect the engine to cost $4-6k.
Thanks in advance for your insight and help.

Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
You can easily build a stroked windsor or a 460 for that kind of power, but the fuel delivery system is gonna put a big dent in your budget.
I'm partial to windsors myself, currently running both a 393 and a 408 stroker. Both were built for right at $3000, but I got a LOT of bargains on parts.
By bargains, I mean quality parts at discount prices. Craigslist is my friend. Sourced cranks, carbs, exhaust and heads for both engines, all new and what I wanted.

BIG price difference between a 400HP engine and a 500HP engine
Might want to narrow it down a little
Expensive to add an overdrive to an FE engine
Proven 385 series builds

Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
I wasn't including the fuel system in the budget as it would be the same parts except for the manifold. That is, unless there's some stock Windsor stuff that works. On that subject, why are you drawn to the Windsor over other engine families? Do the have any advantage over the others aside from weight?ButtaBean wrote:You can easily build a stroked windsor or a 460 for that kind of power, but the fuel delivery system is gonna put a big dent in your budget.

Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
That's an awesome list. I'd like to be closer to 500 at the wheels. I've read quite a bit about getting an OD for the fe. It's the one thing that has driven me crazy. I can't get a much higher rear gear without swapping the axle and I can't get a very tall tire without binding the gears.tnlprt wrote:BIG price difference between a 400HP engine and a 500HP engine

I like the 351w because they are always readily available. Less expensive to build. Ton of different configurations you can turn one into.
That being said, a 385 series can be a fierce thing. Nothing wrong with them in my book.

Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
I have no experience with Windsors, but the seem to be pretty popular. Is there a limit to how much a block can take before you'd want to go aftermarket? Are there any stock transmissions that would handle ~500hp?

Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
I wouldn't go past 500 hp on a stock windsor block, any stock automatic transmission probably won't hold up to being beat on with that many horses.
Its cheap to upgrade a C4 or C6 thankfully.

Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
The 460 will be the easiest, cheapest, and better transmission availability over fe. The associated parts to do the swap will add up though. 400-450 hp will be easy. No need for aftermarket stuff since the cubes and durability are already part of the package at that level.

Not sure where you're buying stock 460's with 400-450 hp, but let the rest of us know, I'd like to score a half dozen of those.

Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
I think he's referring to block, heads, and crank. Might even be able to use the whole long block and port the heads. I did see that ford offers a 460 cu.in Windsor based motor for $10k. I was impressed.ButtaBean wrote:71cc wrote:The 460 will be the easiest, cheapest, and better transmission availability over fe. Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
Exactly a stock block and crank with truck rods will take 500hp all day long. Clean up d3 heads and use flat top pistons and early timing set and you are easily 350 hp. Pick a cam, use headers, recurve distributor and you're closing in to 400hp. No need for stroker, aftermarket crank, rods, heads or even intake. I didn't think someone would assume I suggest a junkyard motor came that way ? I took this to be a "build" thread.

Re: Windsor vs fe vs 460
It is a build thread. I'm just trying to pick a direction. I'd like the option to add more power later without changing platforms but it's a tough choice.

I love FE motors. But for what your wanting the 460 is gonna be tough to beat.
