Re: Ford V-10
Gotta beg to differ........back when they first came out i got the first one in our area in an E350 extended cargo van at the vault company i worked for and I was very impressed with it - the van was loaded with funeral setup equipment on a 3 tier steel rack and pulled a hydraulic driven vault trailer which hauled concrete burial vaults ( very heavy) and it never seemed to run out of power - and where I used to go a lot was hilly. Only problem we ever had with it was it tore up the ring gear at 28,000 miles which turned out to be a recall defect. As far as putting one in a bump I've wondered why someone hasn't done it yet just to be different........haven't seem much in the way of aftermarket parts for them but imagine someone out here does stuff for them........just myRanchero50 wrote:Why? Re: Ford V-10
the 5.4 would be a better truck engine. if I had to have a v-10 i would want the the 2007 or earlier shifting strategy. Kept the v10 in normal power band lower rpm range. in 08' ( at least with the e450 and 5r110 ) they shifted their strategy to keep the engine way up in the rpm range to keep the tailpipe clean im assuming. so the the v10 would spend most of time making alot of noise but not really going anywhere.

Re: Ford V-10
I like the idea as it would make your truck unique and provide adequate power for pulling trailers. Great discussion. Thanks

I work on them in a fleet situation. They are bulletproof and make awesome noise with some dual exhausts. I have wondered if anyone has made an intake manifold for them to use a carburetor on.

Re: Ford V-10
I toyed with the idea a while back after seeing a couple in the wrecking yard, but all the research I did pointed to what Ranchero has already mentioned - it would be hellishly thirsty.

Re: Ford V-10
Didn't the early ones have problems with the inserts for the spark plugs getting pushed out of the heads?

I think most of them did regardless. I had Ford swearing up and down they fixed that problem blowing plugs outta the heads by 04, but all my 09's sneezed them out one after the other. I did have a 5.4l blow a plug out but if was in a e350 cutaway chassis with a 21 foot body on it and 302,000 miles so I cant snivel at that. Seems like though that the repair kit has been refined enough now that after one comes out and we use the repair kit its a very long term repair.

Re: Ford V-10
One of my late uncles had a 2WD 1999 Super Duty F350 Dually with a V10. He installed the Banks Power Pack, headers and intake, and had the cams retarded 2 degrees with custom cam gears. It made 405 HP and 495 LB/Ft at the wheels! I thought it felt a lot stronger than my 1993 F250 with the 460, more down low, and it revved better too! He towed a 35 FT 5th wheel with ease.
This talk of fuel economy blows me away. I don't think anyone would build such a monster, and expect great mileage. A modern turbo diesel of your favorite flavor would be the only consideration if power & economy were the goal.
I currently own a 26 FT 2014 Motorhome with a V10. It has pretty good power on the highway. I have had to punch it at a traffic light a couple of times, to get past passenger cars to switch lanes, and it did just fine. Sure, it gets 7.5 MPG average, but I don't drive the snot out of it. I am considering the Banks Power Pack for it, but don't have the time to dive into it until next Spring.

Re: Ford V-10
I have had 2 of them. A 2002 and an 08. I pull a 24’ enclosed trailer for work and get about 9 mpg. I can get almost 14 empty on the road not towing. Quiet, smooth and powerful. Awesome transmission also. Getting about 10 in my 69 ranger with a 360. Betting mileage would be marginally better with the v10 but you would have a motor that would be more powerful, smoother, quieter with overdrive and lower rpm

You're right, they do eat gas. I have 07 Moho that averages about 8 mpg. Sometimes a little better, sometimes worse. But you only find that engine in heavy commercial vehicles. Mine is 15,000 gvw and has 50,000 miles on it. It has been bullet proof so far. It has good power even when towing. I think putting a V 10 in a old pickup would be a cool project and mpg might be better with such a light vehicle. Can't be any worse than the old 460 V8's! I can't answer the original question about bell housing and fit, don't think anybody has.Ranchero50 wrote:Why? Those engine do nothing well except eat fuel.

What I should have said is, I have only had experience with V10's in large heavy commercial vehicles. I know they are also in pickups.wyngnut55 wrote:You're right, they do eat gas. I have an E450 V10 pulls great 10 miles to the gallon with or without a load. I got rid of an f350 with a 5.4 What a dog. I now have an f250 with a 6.2 awesome.
