New disks - lower brake pedal?

Post by 68shortyford »

Just put disks on my 68 F100 SWB, got all the parts (axels, radius arms, spindles, rotors, calipers, booster, master cylinder, proportioning valve etc.) from a 74 F150 donor. Everything bolted up just fine, but here's the problem, the brake pedal is about an inch closer to the floorboard with this new set-up. Is this right? I haven't bled the brakes yet. Had to mess around with the brake switch also.
Originally the truck had a IL6 and three on the tree. I added PS, PB and a 428/C6 combo But I'm thinking that these changes should not make any difference in the pedal height. What's up?

Does the peddle get back to its normal possition after you pump the brakes a few times. If so, bleed the breaks and see if that helps. If it helps a little but not 100% just give it a couple weeks of driving and it should be fine.

it could be the difference in having power brake versus manual brakes. if thats what you did.

I would bleed the brakes, then see what the pedal does.

Sounds right. '73 and later F100/150 have a lower brake pedal (it's a feature). They mention it in the sales brochure too.

Geez Mike, you dont wast any time, do ya?

Hows it working for you, aside from the different pedal height? (sorry, I forgot to mention that might be the case! )

I too am planning to convert my 1969 F100 to front disc brakes. I got the spindles, calipers, dust shields, pads, brake hoses, bearings etc.. I got the whole package for reference. I have yet to buy any new parts to replace the older ones.

My question, I did not get the proportioning valve from the other truck. I assume this connects to the master cylinder? Is this a necessary addition to make the conversion work? Also is there anything else required that I did not get to make the conversion work?

Thanks,
Patrick

you'll need the brake hose brakets where it hooks to the frame and changes from rubber to steel lines.

yes you do need the P/B proportioning valve! otherwise the brakes will not work correctly.

Thanks for the help. I have since found the tech article about swapping over, and I believe I am good. I may have screwed up because I got spindles off a '76, but no Ibeam, and from what I read they kingpins are different and don't match up.

Back to the junkyard to find another donor.

You do know you have to change out the master cylinder with one for disc brakes?

Yeah, I read that too, but if I read correctly I can still use my power booster. I did upgrade to power drum brakes, so I already have a booster on the truck.

Thanks again for the helps and tips.

Okay, the spindles I got were procured for me by a friend, and he thought it easier to cut the ibeams with a torch than to unbolt everything.

Problem is he doesn't remember the year of the truck, and I cannot tell if they spindles are 73-74 or 75-79. Please let me know which version of the spindles this is.

Thanks,
Patrick

What are the numbers on the spindles?

That could help to identify them

Right....get the date code and that'll tell for sure.

It's kinda hard to tell from the picture, but it appears you have the '73-'74 version, since the bump stop is slightly different from my '79s:
