How To: Cleaning rust stains on body panels

Post by HIO Silver »

I posted this in my build thread on FTE but figured I oughtta share it with you guys too. The more the merrier.

I read a lil ditty in CarCraft about one of the authors using Ajax cleanser to clean up rust on body panels so his beater can look a little better. My choice is Bon-Ami cleanser cuz it says it won't scratch. Let's see about that...

For under $2, these are the tools and a close up of the work area. The rust is really orange and bleeds over the paint.:

The panel... I have no freaking idea what the PO attempted to do but the scratches go down the bump on the entire truck on both sides. Let's see if some elbow grease and water can make a scratched and rusty panel look any better.

After two minutes of light scrubbing and the result is below. The rust is gone from the good paint and only remains in the scratches. It's less obvious compared to the untreated side and also came out a dark flat red color... almost burgundy. I have no idea how long it will last but what heck, I might think about applying wax to preserve it.
