Howdy all!
Cleaned and stripped the headlight valances on my '68 F100. Both were painted white so I stripped the paint only to find the valances are off a Ranger package truck, which mine isn't. One of them is so old the black annealing was blue (or I turned it blue with paint stripper,) so I decided to remove the annealing. I used 1 cup of drain cleaner and 1 cup of cool water to make a slurry. It bubbled and hissed but the slurry took the annealing off very nicely. I neglected to take pictures of the before because I wasn't certain it would work, but I have pictures of the after. I have to apply a second coat of slurry to clean them up really well, but this method does work and doesn't harm the aluminum. I applied the slurry, waited until it stopped bubbling, and then rinsed with the hose.
Take care,
Joe
