Shop around and get several quotes and your best course is to get recommendations from other people on where to have it done. I went to a local place here and asked what they would charge if I did all the prep and they just had to shoot a single color with no clear. He popped off "Our paint jobs start at $2500". I wouldn't let them paint my bicycle just because of his prima donna attitude. But seriously, automotive paint is expensive and a quality job will take hours of sanding and prep. The base coat/clear coat color I'm planning is $290/gallon for the base coat and their clear is $106/gallon. http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/Pricing%20Info.htm I figure at least 2 gallons of each + activator and reducer so there's close to $1000 just in paint. Throw in 20-40 hours labor at $35+/hour and you're looking at $1500+ labor. So, really, $2500-$3500 would be a reasonable estimate and that's probably on the low side. Southern Polyurethanes is about a 30 min drive from me and I went up there and spent an hour shooting the breeze with the guys, while I bought some primer/sealer from them. A great bunch of guys, very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Here's their process they recommend for painting with their coatings http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/pe ... 0paint.htm You can see the time and labor involved from this.

My truck is at a little father/son shop that has done paint on a few vehicles that I have seen and they do great work to the point that these cars are in shows.

Anyway, they should charge a lot more for what they do, but are doing all of the bodywork needed, prep, and paint inside and out on my F350 Crew Cab for $5000.00. This included taking it down to bare metal.

Now, that is probably not a good price to gauge work on as I am pretty much stealing the paint job and work they are doing at that price (but it is taking FOREVER, that's the trade off).

I did have 3 other quotes prior to taking it to them though. This was for just prep and paint. Nothing to do with bodywork or stripping the truck. My quotes were $7200, $8600, and $9700. Of course, my truck is a crew cab and a long bed as well and these are prices from the Southern California area (which tend to be more expensive from what I have seen), but those are the quotes I got for my truck.

Of course, you could go to some cheapie one day paint type place and get it for next to nothing, but you are going to get what you pay for. A decent paint job with proper prep out here would probably run anywhere from $4000 to $7000 on a standard cab.

For my blue '69 I paid $6,500 in St. George, UT. There wasn't any rust. It was a little more expensive then I thought it should be but it was the only place besides Maaco that was willing to do an old vehicle. My dad is getting his '70 F100 painted this week and the guy quoted us $5,000 in Las Vegas. The truck has a little rust in driver door and has several layers of paint that needs to come off the whole truck, it is in much worse shape than mine was.

Be very careful when painting your truck black. If the body work isn't darn near perfect, black will show every ripple everywhere. The last quote I got from a friend of mine was $4800.00 for any color but black. He won't paint it black unless he does the bodywork also.
