What chemicals work!

Post by chad67 »

I know there are alot of people who know of various chemicals that work great for us gearheads. I use "The Works" brand toilet bowl cleaner to remove rust, you can soak small parts or brush it on larger parts and it works great! Well, don't keep all this knowledge to yourself! Post it here so we can all try 'em on our projects!

A friend of mine who owns a golf cart dealership, gave me a quart of Club Car vinyl, rubber & plastic conditioner. I have been using it on my padded dash. Really looks good & has no oily or sticky residue left. I rub it on with a small sponge & wipe it off with a clean diaper. Probably would work good on the door seal rubber also. :)

Got this info from the web. I used this product to remove the clear finish (anodizing) off of aluminum trim. I used it on my 69 grill and worked really good. Gave the grill a good soaking with this stuff then rinsed, repeated step. Made one mistake when doing this. I laid my grill on the cut grass and now no more grass in that area. Since i have the finish off the grill, i have been sanding on it so i can polish later. Got the chemical it at Home Depot.

I did a little test so I could show how well the toilet cleaner works. I soaked half of a nut I found under the seat of my truck for 15 minutes and here are the results.

I mentioned this rust removal tip in another post and someone made a valid point that I feel I should make here, too. Be sure to use the proper eye and skin protection when doing this, and be sure to rinse the parts completely with water before handling. This goes for all the chemicals that we may use in our hobby-READ THE LABEL! It's better to take 5 minutes to think about safety than to spend a lifetime blind or worse!
