I wanted to do some experiments with the sandblasting. I read off the web that white vinegar will help take rust off parts.So i decided to try it. I soaked some small parts overnight in the vinegar(24 hours). When i checked the parts out i did not noticed any rust rubbing off when i rubbed it. I figured the heck with , i just going to sand blast the parts. One of the parts i just soaked half of it in the vinegar ( the pot not being big enough ). When i started sandblasting the part, i found that the rust came off a lot easier on the section that was soaked and took less media to get the rust off. The section that was not soaked took a lot more media. I think i'm going to do all my small parts like this so i can save the wear and tear on my compressor and save on media

There is a brand or toilet bowl cleaner called "the works" that works very well for taking rust off. You can soak the parts or brush it on. Try it, you'll like it. You can buy it at Wal-Mart.

Works very well, I use it all the time on small parts. Keep water handy to rinse parts/hands.

Have any of you read up on acid dip vats for large parts like cabs or beds? They say it won't remove as much metal as sand blasting. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

I've used white vinegar to remove rust off bolts and small parts before. It takes about a week for it to remove the rust, You can see when it really starts working because it will have a rusty foam on top of the vinegar. Takes about 3 days to see it working. I'll leave stuff in it for a week or 2 sometimes. Works good as long as your not in a hurry for the part.

Just wondering if you've tried the toilet cleaner trick...I did a little test this morning to show what 15 minutes soaking can do. I soaked half so you could see what it looked like before.

Beware of toilet bowl cleaner!
The label states to use eye protection and rubber gloves for a very good reason. Most of them will be part hydrochloric acid which is very dangerous to handle. In the USN we'd use undiluted hydrochloric acid, (stainless urinals/toilets) for the heavy clogs my submarine.![Wink :wink:](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

I would go even further and say that most chemicals that we use on our trucks should be used with caution as they can pose serious eye and/or skin problems. Thanks for bringing up the safety aspect of our hobby. I should mention that I rinsed the nut off very well with water before taking the picture of it in my hand.
