4X4 Power steering confusion!

Post by stewartjwnls »

OK, I've searched and searched, and I'm not coming up with what I think I should be.

I have a 68 F250 4X4 that I want to convert from manual to power steering. In searching, I found the tech article that describes this using an early 70's 2WD steering box. However, it refers to another method using a 78-79 4WD box. Supposedly almost a direct bolt-on. I can't find that anywhere.

I have been on several websites, and it seems like there is all kinds of advice about which way to do this, but I'd really like to hear from someone who has done the conversion using the 78-79 box in the process.

Does anyone have a link to this process, or who has done this and can give me some advice?

Thanks in advance.

I have done the conversion to my 71 F250 4X4 using the 78-79 F250 4X4 gearbox. despite what was posted on the tech forum, this is not a direct bolt on conversion. IMO this is a worthwhile conversion but it does have some downsides. 1st is the 78-79 F250 4X4 gearboxes are a little harder to come by, and are usually more expensive to buy. I was able to buy mine online on ebay for 75 bucks though so they can be found at a decent price if you look hard enough. Here's a link to my conversion.

this link shows the very similar process of getting it done. there is also a way to use the 78/79 box by removing the guts from a 2wd box and putting them in the 4wd box. but i couldnt finsdd the link i had. http://www.bcbroncos.com/powersteering.html

Power assist from a 73-77 250 4x4 bolts on. The 78-79 4x4 box is not at all a bolt in, but it works OK done right. The 2wd box fits very poor.

Now that's really interesting. I don't think I've seen anything about that version anywhere.

Do you know of a link to more detail on this?

Thanks.
