Remove a hydraulic trailer brake?

Post by patrickdotryan »

My bump has an under-dash mounted Kelsey Hayes trailer brake unit that Tees into the hydraulic brake line coming out of the master cylinder. From what I've read on this site, when I apply brake pressure, the unit uses that variable pressure to supply the right amount of voltage to wires that head to my rear trailer plug. It is the kind that has a lever that moves to the right as I apply the brakes. I can move that lever manually also. I would like to remove this because I am trying to tidy up all my wiring, which will include removing all trailer accessories and getting back to the original harness only. In future I may (neatly!) add back a trailer plug for occasional light towing. My questions are:

1.) My brakes are excellent currently and I don't want to affect that. Will removing this change my current brake system at all (I assume this unit provides no boost to my truck brakes)?
2.) It Tees of after the master cylinder. I'm assuming I'll have to re-bleed the system, but will I have to re-bleed the master cylinder?
3.) Any other tips / warnings?

Thanks

you will need a line coupler to put the lines back together after you remove the t from the line. you will probably have to bleed the brakes but not the master. it wont hurt anythign to leave it or remove it.

fordman knows of what he speaks. I removed mine, it is a easy process.
