brake job discouraged and encouraged

Finally getting around to working on my brakes. It's taking longer than I expected to get all this done. :sigh: Got my master bench bled and mounted, got right tube nuts/adapters for the lines on the master, and then found that I had a bad rear wheel cylinder. It was rusted and pitted badly. Talked the wife into stopping by Napa on her lunch break so I now have the new wheel cylinders mounted. I guess tomorrow I'll replace the front calipers, since I need to bleed the system anyway, and they've been overheated several times. I'll check how much meat is left on the front pads, if low I'll change em. I've gotten the rotors cherry red a couple of times...can they be turned, or should I just replace em? Once I get all this done, I'm gonna install the new booster.

they cna be turned as long as they arnt cracked or worn past a safe turning point. but as long as they arent cracked or warped i see no need to change them. getting them that hot though there had to be damage of soem sort. yo umay have to replace them.

Overheating the calipers isn't a big deal. A lot of us overheat the brakes out on the track all the time. We bleed out some of the fluid to remove the boiled fluid and everything is fine. Rebuild the calipers if you want, but replacing the caliper is not necessary.

What we don't do when we come in off the track is not set the brake. Setting the brake when the rotors are hot (track hot, not street hot) will warp the rotors because they can't cool evenly.

Ive seen photos of night races where the cars coming into the pits have bright red rotors. They get fuel and head back out onto the track.

I've overheated the brakes in our Datsun 240z bad enough that I barely have brakes at all. My guess is that during the day we just can't see the red in the rotors. After the brakes cool they're fine. We've done that multiple times without even rebuilding the calipers. After the race weekend is over we change the scorched pads and bleed the brakes. Clearly we need to run fresh air vents to cool the brakes.
