1971 ford F250 only offered disc brakes on the two wheel drive models...correct? I just bought a 4wd that has disc brakes on the front and I wanted to see if it was a factory option. The seller told me it was a factory F350 (it has the emblem on the hood) 4WD single wheel truck. After I got it home and checked the title and the vin on the truck, apparently what I have is a (F26) F250 4WD that has a (F10) F100 2WD cab with a hood that has F350 emblems on it. WOW...guy swears he's known this truck his whole life and thats how it came. C'mon man...people never cease to amaze me. Guys, help me out if ya can...thanks
Never ceases to amaze me how many fellows are 213% positive thier highboy came exactly as it is with a 2wd body, aux gas tank, 390, power steering, power brakes and front discs.
Some dent era F250's and all the F350 4X4's came with a dana 60 up front, but I'm not aware of any bump era F250's ever coming with a dana 60 front. Most had the standard dana 44 froont and a few had the heavier gvw dana 44HD. Neither of which had disc brakes. IIRC around 76 is when the dana 44 got it's first set f disc brakes.
The ONLY bumpside trucks to come with a 60 front axle were special order. These were usually forrest service and oil company crew cab F-250 4x4's. The 60 front may well have only been available in the crewcabs as these are the only ones I have ever seen or heard of. After writing that I know I sound like the 4x4 know it all, but the NW is the 4x4 center of the universe. If it was a unique 4x4 it was probably sold here or ended up here.
The closed knuckle 60 fronts are a glorified Dana 44 HD. The axles are nearly the same (60 shafts are shorter), the hubs are the same. The knuckles are larger though.
