i dont mean to sound harsh but if you do not know how to replace a belt on your truck than maybe you should take it to a shop.it is not hard at all you can also get a manual and it will tell you step by step.just my

Re: Power steering belt.
It's self explanatory actually.
You should consider buying a repair manual. If you can't find one at your local auto parts store, the next generation truck is pretty close. The 73 to 78 trucks used the same engines with the same specs.

Re: Power steering belt.

On your belt change what is it specifically that you have concerns with? The more specifics you can provide on your questions the better answers other members will be able to provide. For the most part this should be straight forward though, loosen the adjuster bolt and the mounting bolts and remove/replace the belt, tighten the belt and then the mounting bolts. The belt tension you do not want to over tighten it just tight enough to not slip and not deflect up and down much. Generally if you can grab (with the engine off of course) the belt midway on the longest run and twist it 1/4 turn that is about right.
You may find these diagrams helpful as well:

If you would like to let us know which engine you have and which diagram looks most like your installation, perhaps we can be more specific.

Re: Power steering belt.
Thanks Duckryder. I was going to do just that but didn't know if there was any special way of doing it. Thats the diagram I was looking for. Just not sure from the diagram which are the mounting bolts and which are the adjusting bolts number wise. It's a V8 - 360.Thanks again.

Re: Power steering belt.
truely it depends on the year of pump bracket you have as to which botls are which. the 71 and up style have three bolts on top to lossen then the nut on the end is the adjuster. and i cant remember without looking how to do the 68-70 brackets.

Re: Power steering belt.
the 9 series belt may be too wide i am unsure. i think the 7 series belt is probably he right size i may be wrong though. none of my trucks are here so i cant tell you want the belt number is. i do have a belt here that came from a dealer installed power steering unit and the belt number is a 7545.
the squealign is because of a loose belt. the smoke i am unsure. it may be the wrong size of belt of rthe pulley. or there is soemthign on the pulley that is burning off. power steerign fluid of something.

Re: Power steering belt.
Tighten the belt until it feels good. Ignore the old marks. The squeal is because the belts is loose and slipping. When the belt is properly tightened, you should be able to flex the belt still, with some difficulty. After the belt breaks-in, it will stretch a bit and need to be readjusted.Marco wrote:Replaced belt w 9440 (was told would fit).Tightened to old marks. Squealing and a little smoke. Any thoughts? Re: Power steering belt.
jack up the front of the truck. get the wheels off of the ground. start the truck and run it. while the truck is running and the wheels are off the ground turn the steering wheel both ways all the way around several times. that will purge out any air in the fluid system. if it doent work after that you will have to confirm wheather the pump or box is bad or if one of the lines is plugged. to figure out if the pump is bad remove both hoses from the box and put both hoses into a container. then start the truck and see if the pump is circulating fluid. if you remove the hoses you will have to purge the air out of the system again.

Re: Power steering belt.
Make sure you are using the correct fluid as well, as per the dipstick. It probably specifies Type F ATF and in any case "Power Steering Fluid" is probably not the right stuff...

You're right I did use PSF. I knew not to but... Can I just drain that and put in ATF? If so how do I drain the PSF? Thanks.

Re: Power steering belt.
yo ucan try doing this. remove the suppply line from the steering box. put it in a container. run the truck. that should pump out most of the fluid. there may be another better way to do it.
