Help edumacate me on steering

Post by habu »

Hey,
I have a '69 F250 CS with Powersteering. The steering box is a bendix from what I can tell. it looks like this...

So what's the difference between the ford box and the bendix box that justifies the 200 dollar difference ? I've seen reference to a saginaw box as well, in a part-out thread by fordman in the classifieds.

Basically I need to rebuild/replace mine. It has a really rough spot that makes it almost impossible to park the dang thing. It'll be a-ok then it'll hit the rough spot where it takes two hands to turn the thing at all. It happens at speed, not as bad though, and at low-speed/parking. It's also neither left or right. One time it's when you turn right and the other when you turn left (I think she's possesed.. LOL) The problem is that the bendix box is hard to come by I've come to find out and it's easily 300+ bucks and the local parts store.

(sob story) because of where I live this makes the truck un-enjoyable to drive due to how difficult it is to park in the little area, between a full-sized ram truck and a full-size buick. Don't want to drive the thing 'cause it's so hard to park it when I get back. (end sob story). Long story short, I'd like to replace it, but really... 300+ bucks for a box on a truck thats 40 years old ?? What am I missing

Find yourself a Ford/Saginaw box and a steering column to match, and forget the Bendix box.

The Ford/Saginaw boxes are plentiful, either used or rebuilt, and they're not nearly as expensive as the Bendix.
Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something.--Plato
Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

the for dbox is also called the saginaw boz because of where it was made at. saginaw mich. the bendix box is a hard to find item in good shape. and many of the slick guys want them because they dont have to make as many mods because of how easily they fit thier trucks.
