Stock tires for 72 F250?

Post by 1972_F250 »

Hi all just joined and this is my first post.

Does anybody know what is the stock tire size front and back for the 1972 F250 Camper Special Sport Custom 2wd?

I have seen tons of questions regarding the use of different size wheels and larger tires but I can't seem to find what the stock size was. I have the brochure but for some reason it does not make mention of the tire, only the wheel size.

The original 16.5 wheels are on it now, for some reason the back wheel looks a bit deeper than the front and the tire that is currently on the back is some monster thing that looks as though it was made for some lifted 4x4 and the front wheels seam a bit skinny. This is what's currently on there now: Front 9.50R 16.5 LT, Rear 33x12. 50R 16.5 LT.

I would just swap them all out for for some 16" wheels and tires but the two front ones look like new. I figured I might save some money by just replacing the rears to match the front but I want to make sure the front tires that are currently on it are the stock size.
Thanks!
Marc

Marc, I believe that the OEM size was 9.50 X 16.5. That is very close in width and height to the 265-70R-16" I have on my '70 F250 now. By the looks of your rear wheel/tire combination, they are from a dentside Super Camper Special from the mid seventies. I would ditch the 16.5's as they are being phased out of production. I got my 16" OEM Ford steel wheels from a local pick-n-pull for about $100.00 for all five wheels. Thing to watch for is Ford switched their 8 lug bolt pattern from standard to metric in, I believe, 1997 or 1998. I'm sure some of our more knowledgeable members can set me straight on this. Also with my 265-70RR-16" tires, I DIDN'T have to re-calibrate my speedometer. Had it checked at AAA and it was spot on.

Those rears do look like stock 9.75 X 16.5 rims and those are desirable and valuable. I have sold many of them and use them myself. I am not sure about 16.5's being phased out of production as they are readily available and the only thing the Goodyear rep I know ever said was that slow moving sizes were being eliminated. The 33 X 12.5 and 35 X 12.5 are extremely popular sellers as are the 7.50 and 9.50. I think the odd sizes like 31 X 10.5 is the kind of stuff they are not selling anymore. That is a demand issue and is no different than any other products. You can't buy a 68 Ford pickup from Ford either, they phased them out years ago! LOL I do know that I have no trouble getting tires and have these on several of my trucks. Hawkrod

Just wanted to say thank for all of ya getting back to me.
I like the truck. It just seems to be a never ending expense. Had the heads rebuilt, new water pump, radiator, alternator, fuel pump, battery, solenoid battery cables, hoses and belts. Carb rebuilt, new interior and I still need to have it painted and get wheels and tiers for it.

Now I'm dealing with a front coil spring issue. Ya see I had some suspension work done to the front, not much just new shocks and coil springs. Sounds easy enough but... Ya see I don't drive the truck that much in fact hardly at all. I just got it to tinker around with so it sits in the driveway and gets started a couple times a week and drove around a couple times a month just keep everything moving.

When I picked it up from the shop that did the work I remember saying "hey that looks good a little higher in the front" and drove away and parked it. As to the coil springs, I never noticed it until about 2 weeks ago or so that the front tires were angled in at the bottom I knew it wasn't like that when I bought it and that's when it hit me.. The knucklehead that put the new coils on put to tall of spring in there. That was almost 2 years ago or so and the shop is closed up now. So I'm stuck with a few options 1. have the coils removed and put the right ones in there 2. have the existing ones cut and hope it works 3. have the I beams bent to make for the spring height and 4. buy the Econo I-beam 3inch front lift kit from Autofab. What to do... I like the way it sits now which is about 1.5 inches higher in the front than stock but can't find anybody to bend the I beams, the Autofab lift kit will set me back $1100.00 complete, cutting the existing springs might not work and having the coils replaced just seems like a waste of money, seeing they are brand new.
Oh well...

Marc, Sounds like you're happy with the way the truck's stance is...so find an alignment shop that will "cold" bend your I beams. Positive camber is a typical problem with twin-I-beams after you've replaced your coil springs. Took me two months to finally find an alignment shop that properly "cold" bent my 70' F250's I beams. I've seen the diagram Keith has that illustrates this procedure right here on FORDification :fr: . Print it out and fax/email it to local alignment shops in your area...you'll find an old guy somewhere that knows what you're talking about and can do the job correctly. Cost me $150.00 to have it done after I installed cargo coils in my F250. Hope this helps.
