Custom Hydroboost milled plate/bracket

Post by la1031 »

I posted a starter thread about putting a hydro boost setup in my 1968 SWB. I tried to modify the mounting plate that the booster came with and mucked it up pretty bad. The problems I was having was there was bad pedal rod length and the nut on the back of the hydro-boost was hitting the firewall. Well there is a solution, I found a guy that is making the milled aluminum piece like you see available for all the bronco guys.

I will post some pics of my setup soon. I am hoping that he gets a version on his website as well so that everyone who wants to get the adapter has it a bolt on. He is at http://www.tallonhydraulics.com.

The guy I spoke to from Tallon was Butch, BTW. Very helpful. He said this unit should work from 67-79.

I do not know if this is on his website yet, but I would call if you cannot find it.

Looks good checked out the website is the unit one piece or is there a part on both sides of the firewall?

Inside the truck is the pedal/column support bracket with four weld nut already there. The outside piece is the aluminum piece that I have in the pictures. You can purchase just the milled adapter or the entire hydro-boost setup.

A discerning eye will notice that I use 3 bolts and one stud(lower engine side), the reason is my brother who was helping me that day started that bolt and cross threaded it into the column support bracket inside. I drilled it out with a 3/8 and grade 8 bolted it from the inside.

The nicest part of the adapter is the spacing behind the booster. Those of you who know, there is a 2" nut on the back of the hydro-boost unit that will not pass through the original firewall hole(please check my photobucket to see). The adapter allows the nut to move toward the engine, inside the aluminum piece, so that it is a bolt on configuration. The owner of Tallon told me that he can re-clock the hydro bracket any direction as well.

All in all, i am very happy. :)

Those are nice and I saw a few of those online somewhere too but I couldn't see myself paying more for the bracket than what my whole hydroboost setup cost. I ended doing it the hard way and made my own. I also butchered the oem mounting plate, drilling out the firewall hole was also a little tricky.

I see a bunch of threads for Hydro, but where's all the driving impressions? I know Hyd is the way to go, it may help others to join the crowd when they know what it really does.

I installed Hydroboost for 2 reasons. I makes pushing your pedal much easier to push vs the braking force that you get. To clarify, hydroboost does not give you more braking force, it just allows the user to get max braking force without having to push real hard on the pedal. This is why you hydroboost on big cars from the 70's and large trucks(3/4 and 1 ton) today.

The other reason is vacuum. I intend on putting a hot cam in my ride and I do not want to fool with adding vacuum booster. Hydro boost being hydraulic does not rely on engine vac to operate, so it can be a safer and more predictable system.

This is just my :2cents:

The only negatives to hydro boost is , expense and the pedal feels weird - vacuum feels like your stepping on a pillow, hydro feels like you stepping on a bag of BBs sort of...I dunno
