PS Pump Pulley Ratio

Post by 67F10YR »

I posted this question already, but lost it somehow and don't know if it was answered or not. So here it is again. I want to install power steering in my '67 F100. I got the parts I need from a '72 at Pic 'n Pull except for a carnkshaft pulley. The pump has a 4-1/2" pulley and I think the '72 had the same size pulley on it, but I didn't check at the time. I'm thinking of eliminating the air pump (I'm told it's not necessary and won't hurt the engine) and use that pulley, which is a 5-1/2" pulley mounted on the water pump. Is this a good idea or not? Is that ratio of the 5-1/2" to 4-1/2" acceptable?

a 67 352 has a different damper on the crank shaft. so you have to use the damper from the 72 engine as well in order to mount the 72 pulley on the water pump. as far as other matching pulleys. it all depends on depth not how large or small they are. because with the wrong depth the pulleys wont line up and you wont be able to put a belt on.

Hey, Fordman. How you doing? I was hoping I'd get a response from you. From what I see online here, your advice is well taken and you obviously are knowledgable about Ford trucks. I just reread my post and saw that it may have been unclear. I wrote it in a hurry here at work, so besides the mispelled 'carnkshaft', I don't think the pulley situation was very clear either, which is probably why 6 other readers viewed it and didn't respond. I wish I could submit a drawing or photo of what I have and what I propose to do, but I don't have that here with me. I'll try to clarify what I meant.

The '72 I pulled the pump and steering box from had a (I'm pretty sure though I didn't measure it) 4-1/2" pulley at the crank which in turn ran the ps pump. The ps pump also has a 4-1/2" pulley, so it had a 1:1 ratio. My '67 only has the double belted pulley at the crank and runs the alternator. But at the water pump, I have a third pulley that runs the air pump. That pulley is 5-1/2". I would like to disconnect the air pump and close off the holes into the manifold and use that 5-1/2" pulley to run the ps pump. This way I won't have to mess with the way the engine is setup now and just add the bracket and pump on the opposite side of where the air pump is now. I don't think there would be any problem lining them up this way, so it seems my only concern at this point is whether or not the 5-1/2" would overdrive the 4-1/2" pump pulley. This stock setup on the '67 with a double pulley on the crankshaft and a triple on the water pump seems kind of odd to me, but then I don't know a whole heck of a lot about mechanics anyway. I have a mechanic friend that always works with me on projects, but these are his questions as well as mine. He's never seen a setup quite like this before either, but then he's a Chevy person, so who's to say?

I wouldn't suggest using a water pump pulley to drive the power steering pump. I'd recommend getting the correct lower pulley and drive it from that.

Ok. I have a 6-3/4" crank pulley available. Would that work with the 4-1/2" ps pump pulley?
