Who has switched parts from a dent column to a bump column?
I know I can bolt the 73-77 column into my 67 because I will be putting in a saginaw style box.
However, can I swith out the shift tube and shaft with the pieces of my original manual steering cloumn. I would like to keep the original column.
If not, how hard is it to connect the hazard switch up to the wiring. The column I bought has the hazard switch on the side.
Edit: Anyone on here done this before?

just change the tss and the tss colar from each collumn and use the 73-77 column. the manual inner and outer column is too long i think for a saginaw swap.

Will the wiring not match up? What about the hazard switch on the 73-77 column?fordman wrote:just change the tss and the tss colar from each collumn and use the 73-77 column. the manual inner and outer column is too long i think for a saginaw swap.

I was thinking I would do everything listed in the tutorial http://www.fordification.com/tech/steering-column.htm except use the 73-77 shaft instead of cutting the one I have. I figured I would have to cut the shift tube and outer housing.

do you know there is no difference in the shift tube or outer column between the two era columns. so why cut up and weld your old one? but if you want to go for it.

I thought the manual shift tube and outer housing had to be cut because of the extra length. Shoot, I don't want to cut anything if I dont' have to .fordman wrote:do you know there is no difference in the shift tube or outer column between the two era columns. so why cut up and weld your old one? but if you want to go for it.

I haven't done this, but I know that the manual-steering column IS longer than the power-steering version. If you wanted to use a manual-steering steering column behind a Saginaw box, you WILL have to shorten the main housing and shaft....unless it's a 4-spd (floor-shift) column, in which case the main housing is already short enough.
I'd advise you to just find the appropriate power steering column to mate up with the Saginaw box. While you can cut and weld and make it work, it's still a lot of work. Just my

Thanks Keith. Your tutorial is very helpful. I have a 73-77 column, but I'm not sure how to wire up the hazard switch. Oh well, I may end up with something totally different.FORDification wrote:I haven't done this, but I know that the manual-steering column IS longer than the power-steering version. the 73-77 hazard switch cant be used. because the wire size and pins on the wire wont fit in the 67-72 plug. dont use the 73-77 hazard switch. use the 67-72 switch.

Wiring the hazard switch is clean and easy, not something to be afraid of. In your harness you will find one extra white wire with red trace. That is the only wire that you need to worry about. You simply hook that wire to a flasher cannister and from the other terminal of the flasher cannister to a constant 12V power source (not a key on source) and that is all there is to it. If you do not want the emergency flashers then you simply remove the turn signal switch housing (you just remove the switch and the two bolts underneath but putting it back together can be a bit of fun!) and instal one from an older truck and put it together with the older switch. It is actually very easy to do this as well. As far as the mismatch of wiring pins, the easiest fix is to make a jumper. Get a pigtail from an old column and part of teh wiring from a newer Ford (pretty much all mid 70's cars and trucks use the same connector) and make a short jumper to splice the new to the old with no cutting. It is easy and clean and if you ever change it unplugs and also makes switch replacement a breeze. The 73-79 switches work just fine in a 67-72. In fact all of my trucks have 78/9 tilt columns and all have working emergency flashers. On the 78/9 columns there is also another extra wire for the horn as Ford eliminated the horn relay on the later trucks. This is no problem either as all you do is ground the big blue and yellow wire and all works fine. Hawkrod
