Wanting to convert to 4x4

Post by 70Fordf-100 »

I know its probably alot of work but thats okay... Whats the easiest way to convert to 4x4? Just find a 4x4 frame? would I be able to use a 78-79 frame? I know most will say buy a 4x4 but I got my two wheel drive for two hundred bucks so im stickin with it.

You don't want to do all the work to convert your 2WD frame to a 4WD. You'd be WAY better off finding a rolled or non-running 4WD and swap your body over onto it.

The '73-'79 4WDs will work, with some minor modifications. Those frames are the same as ours from the cab forward, but from the cab back there are two differences:

1) The frame from the rear cab-mounts back is 4" wider than ours (2" each side). You'll have to drill new holes in your box to bolt it down and you'll also have to reinforce the bed where you drill those holes so the bolts won't pull through.

2) The '73-'79 frame is also a few inches longer. When you mount the bed with the rear wheels centered in the wheelwell, you'll have a slightly larger gap between the cab and the front of the box. You can either live with that or move the bed forward to restore the proper gap, and then not have the rear wheels centered. Another thing you could do is move the rear spring mounts a few inches forward to bring the differential forward, which will center it in the wheelwells, and then of course you'd have to shorten the driveshaft.

...or you can take a drive to California and get the '70 chassis that a member here is trying to sell:
