More brake help

Post by grncustomf100 »

OK. So far I've replaced all brake related parts on rear axle. Now I am focusing my efforts on the brake line running the frame to the front.

The question I have is, What is the thing that the lines are connectted to down on the frame below the Master Clylinder. The rear line comes in and then a line goes up to the MC. Also, the front brake lines come in, then go out to the MC. It also appears to have some type of electrical connection on it.

What is it called and what is its purpose?

Can I get a replacement from the local parts place? The reason I ask is b/c the fittings have quit a bit of rust and I am having trouble brakeing the nuts loose. I have spayed some liquid wrench on it and I am going to try again tommorrow.

Thanks in advance :fr: .

That's the brake pressure differential switch, a.k.a. distribution block. The front brake circuit is fed into the front of the block, the rear brake circuit is fed into the rear of the block, and there's a valve in-between the two circuits that is balanced by equal line pressure from each. If one circuit loses pressure, the imbalance in pressure causes the valve to go off-center which actuates the electric switch to turn on the warning light on the dash (just above the parking brake) to warn you of brake problems.

If you're looking to replace it, just hit the Mustang restoration vendors, as the similar-year Mustangs use the exact same piece.

when i have had trouble breaking the lines loose from there i put a small pair of vise grips on the nut. i then hit the vise grips in the direction it would take to rotate the nut. i only hit it once that usually breaks it loose. but not always. soemtimes the vise grips slip. and then i end up retightening them and hitting it again. the valve can be rebuilt. it only has a few o rings in it.

OK, so I ended up cutting the lines at the distribution block. No biggy b/c I am replacing the lines anyhow. I removed the bracket and block so I could get to it better. I eventully was able to get everything uscrewed from the block. This thing was really crudded up pretty good. BUT, I can not get the piston out of the block. I'm sure it is just as crudded inside as the outside was. SO, there goes plan A, to rebuild the distribution block.

On to plan B, buy a new one. Probably my best option being this thing is so nasty anyway. But that is easier said than done. I am have a tough time finding one on the internet. I have not checked local parts house directly, but they dont have it listed online. I will check w/ them directly tommorrow.

Does anyone have a good source for a distribution block for manual brakes w/ drums @ all corners??

fo rplan A try using air pressure to dislodge it from the houisng. use brake cleaner and or brakefluid as a lube to help get it out. you might look at mustangsunlimited. i have heard of them and thats all i know.

Back to plan A, I was able to get the piston out of the dist. block. Saving me bout 90 bucks.

Going to clean it up real good and reuse. Seems like I read somewhere to use Acatone to clean up the brass. Can anyone back this up?

And can I get a rebuild kit from sonewhere?

Just another step closer to get mean green back on the road!!

thanks for that link. something to always remember. never mix bleach and amonia. that is toxic and kills people. back in the old days. i think maybe the 50's housewives were mixing it in the laundry. and the gas fom the mixure would kill them while in a enclosed space they were in.

Keep in mind that our differential valves use square edge O-rings, not round ones.

Also replacements must be compatible with brake fluid.
