pitman arm to steering arm alignment question

Post by mlheppl »

I'm in the process of converting my 71 highboy over to power steering. I'm using the steering sector and pitman arm from a 78 F250 4X4. All I have left to do is order a new drag link, cut it to fit. Weld it back together and install it and I'll be don (hopefully). Before I start on the drag link, I've got a question regarding the geometry between the pitman arm and steering arm on the knuckle. When I look down the frame of my truck, I can see that my pitman arm extends past the frame about 1" beyond what the connection point is on the steering arm mounted on the knuckle. Is this excessive?

If I connect the drag link the way things are set up now, will I still have full turning ability in both directions? Do I need to get the pitman arm more inline with the steering arm?

Here's a pic of what it looks like looking down the frame:

Let me see if I can supersize the picture a bit

Here's my thoughts on this: If the pitman arm is set at the center of the sector's stroke, and the wheels/tires are centered before installing the draglink; then there shouldn't be an issue. Is this a solid assumption or am I off base on this?
