Streeing Replacement

Post by LonnieD »

My son's 69 F250 needs to have the steering box pulled and replaced. He had the whole front end replaced and the steering is very loose. It's been adjusted but when he gets on a rutted road it throws him all over. I found a new box (Ford not Bendix) for 189.00 but I've never done this before and was wondering how mush effort it took to do this type of job. Anyone know where I can a good step by step list to help? Thanks :?

Hi LonnieD,

Not sure from your post if it has P/S or not but these are some very good tutorials.

If it's 2 wheel drive go here:

If it's 4 wheel drive go here:

This place is great and Keith has done a tremendous job with the tutorials, hope this helps.

there is a few members from that area that might be able to help ya out. I myself do deliveries to the Covington Wal-Mart on a weekly basis, so if you need someone to show ya something, I may be able to help there.

Actually, if yours is manual steering, I may have a used box I can get ya for a lot less than what you are looking at.

Wow, thanks so much for the warm welcome! I've been over at another Ford Truck and Ranger site and never did get such a welcome or assit, that I have here! I'm inpressed...I'll check out my youngest son steering and see if it's power or not..I think it is due to it being a camper special Ranger...but I'll look this evening. Thnks all again :D :D

Hey bwc302,

Thanks for the correction in my post. That was pretty random, where the heck did that come from ( the link I mean ) :dk: . Good luck LonnieD and keep us posted. If I get mine running, I have all the parts to convert to P/S and can't wait. I won't be touching that little part of it, so all should go just fine.

I guess I was just wondering if this will be just a un-bolt, bolt in job or replace the rag joints and drill out the studs and becomes a real pin in the butt? My son-in-law owned it for many years an replaced the 390 with a new one, so the miles are very low. Then my oldest son drove it back and worth to work and kept it nice and had the whole front end re-built over at Les Schabb (sp) but didn't do the steering. Now when you drive you have to be careful since it likes to wander...youngest son has it now and it's sat for several months waiting for him to do something...so I'll have to step up I guess.. it needs his new muffler put on (has it but not installed)... fix the steering and she's ready. I'd drive it and park my new Ranger but son0in0law had this bench seat put in that's so high and padded that my thighs rub the steering wheel and I can't get comfortable. (I know too much information) :D

If you have PS you can replace the steering wheel with a smaller aftermarket unit to gain some space.
That's what I plan to do.
