Drum / Disc Brake Boosters

Post by Bob 68 »

I'm putting disc brakes from a 73 F350 on my 67 F350. My question is, do I have to swap the brake booster when I change to the disc brake master cylinder? I have the booster from the disc brake truck, but it's all dented and rusted and the one on the 67 looks like new so I would like to use that one if I could. Both boosters look the same on the outside but I don't know about the inside. Is there a difference?

You shouldn't have to. The '73 MC should bolt right up to your existing booster. However, the small booster used in '67 was a small 7-incher, and is barely adequate. It'll get the job done, but it would be considered an upgrade to use anything from '68-up and it's an upgrade I'd recommend.

The only problem is that when you go to a 68-up booster, you're also going to have to get a '68-'72 brake pedal assembly and bracket, since the later booster won't work with the (one-year-only) '67 pedals. :o Yes, it'll be a little extra work swapping in the brake pedal assembly, but I think you'd be happier in the long run, and finding repair/replacement parts in the future will be much easier.

supposedly you can also redrill your 67 brake pedal to use the 68-77 1/2 booster instead of the 67 booster.

Keith, Thanks for the info. I didn't know about the pedal difference, but because of a 4 speed to C6 swap I've already changed the pedal from a 69 F250 parts truck so I guess I'll use the newer booster.

Not to Hi-jack but I've got my parts trucks and am getting ready to do the 73-79 Front Disc Brake swap. I currently have a brake booster and bracket on my truck from a Camper Special. The parts truck I got, 1973 non-power front disc brakes. Do I have to find a dentside with a booster to use that bracket, or can I use the booster bracket I currently have?

I know I need to get the correct Master Cylinder for the 73, and probably the correct booster, but can I reuse my current bracket?

Thanks,
Patrick

the brackets are the same up until 78. that is when they changed them. so your bumpside booster brackets will work fine.
