2 good tread tires

Post by 1971ford »

If you were to have 2 tires with 80% tread, and two with 35% tread, would you put the good ones up front or in the rear? I put the good ones in the rear but now i am thinking about putting them in the front being that weight transfer puts the most stopping force on the front, and the more tread should help prevent hydroplaining and should help grip while steering.... right??

I always put the best tires on the front because they get the most abuse and carry the most weight, rear tires for the most part only trial along behind the fronts and dont have to steer, and if i was going to have a blow out i want it to be on the rear and not the front.

That's what im thinking.

However i might want to add that my truck is alittle different than stock. It has much more weight in the back than stock that is. 32 gallon fuel cell, 2 spare wheels, aluminum jack, all in the very back of the bed. Also a full bed cage, and cab cage. Front has a 429.
But still, i think i am going to swap the better ones to the front tomorrow.

you want the best ones in frotn for the steering power with them. it is bad to have a flat tire. it is worse with a front tire. i had one blow going 65 mph. it threw me into the other lane a little when it blew. it was a front tire that blew. this was on my 94 F250 with 235 85 16 tires on it.

Front it is, tomorrow morning.

Wow i guess this means that im going to have to become a good drifter. It is already hard enough keeping my rearend in line. I guess i'll be scanning craigslist for some more used tires :D
Adding to the list of why my truck is interesting in the rain...
Locked rearend
Tons of torque out of the 429
Little tread on rear tires

But i would rather have front steering control. The back im not worried too much about. I have only kicked the rearend out when i "expiremented" , hasn't happened on accident yet. But i like to be able to point my tires and go that way. Not to mention more stopping grip now.
