Brake booster question

Post by OldRedFord »

Im looking for a new brake booster. Looking online at the local parts stores, the pics of the brake boosters for a 1972 have a longer push rod then what mine has...

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalo ... done+Reman

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... RHYAMS____

In the first attached pic, is my booster. Note the rod is so short. In the 2nd attached pic is the linkage that goes between the booster and the pedal.

LMC has a booster with what appears to be a short rod. At least that is what the picture suggests. But its for 65-66, and 67 trucks. Mine is a 72.

Here is a picture I found on here, but my brake booster doesn't have the long rod shown.

Whats the deal here?

You've got a later model brake booster, from a 73-77 model.

It's about 99.44% sure that it's not the original.

All of the 68-72 trucks have the long-pushrod booster.

The firewall grommet matches the rectangular rod for the linkage. :?

I would have to enlarge the hole in the firewall a bit.

That's correct.

The 73-77 is a direct bolt-in swap, in most instances.

The grommet will attach correctly.

The later booster is for front disc brakes. Interesting, you wouldn't think there would be a difference.

Ill just order one for a 1972 F100 with non adjustable push rod.

The firewall seal won't be correct.

You'll also want one with an adjustable push rod if you replace with the correct booster.

How does it hook to the brake pedal then?

I wish i had seen this, already ordered the booster with non adjustable rod.

some booster can have a nonadjustable rod. it will hook up the same way as the master cylinder rod botls up. the only thing it may mess with or change could be the brake light switch length or stroke. but that is easily overcame with adjustment or a 73-79 brake light swithc. they are longer.

Ok here is the situation now. I can not get the new booster to go in. Like the rod wants to go through the firewall in a different spot. Can I just flip the brackets around?

It looks like if I do that it will work.

Are the dentside power booster brakets the same as the bumpside?

I flipped the brackets around so the push rod lined up with the hole in the firewall.

It reaches the pedal, but the brake pedal is only like 3 or 4 inches off the floor, and the brake pedal switch is NOWHERE near reaching, even adjusted all the way.

One of the brackets flipped.

How close the pedal is to the floor. Note the large gap for the switch.

Where pedal should be.

Other booster bracket.

How low the booster is with the brackets flipped. The master cylinder would be on top of the windshield washer tank.

the first thing i see is that you are using a dentside brake pedal. that is part of the problem as to why it sits closer to the floor. the booster brackets you are using are the same as what we have and are suppose to use. so that isnt the problem. what truck make model and year did you order the booster to fit? the bracket flip thing is fine as long as it works.
