It this a good price for a cold bend?

Post by mrtleavitt »

Hey guys, I finally found someone that can still cold bend I-beams to correct the camber issue on the old ford. He quoted me $140. Does that seem like a reasonable price? It's a lot for just an hour of work but I've hunted a long time to find someone who can still do this, or even knows what the heck I'm talking about at that matter.

That sounds pretty reasonable.

You have to consider that an alignment on a passenger car sometimes runs as much as $69.00.

Also consider that he has the proper tools, which were a major investment.

I remember paying $75-$80 for the last twin-I-beam alignment I had done to one of our service vehicles back in the early 80's. With that in mind, it doesn't sound so bad.

It's also a matter of supply and demand. Like you said in your post, you've hunted a long time to find someone who can still do this. Not every alignment shop has both the tools and the know-how to use them. That has to account for something!!!
Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something.--Plato
Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Sounds right on to me. Only one shop left in my town with the tools & know-how to bend I beams & they wont even touch them for less than $150 bucks. But they know how to work on a twin I beam front end, so its worth it to me.

$140 is a good price.

I had mine done at Co-Op last year for 80 bucks. One of the advantages of living in farm country I suppose.

Cool thanks for the input. Did you guys notice any better handling afterwards? Or did the front end finally just look normal.

I guess that depends on your specific truck. I'm guessing you lifted your truck and you now have positive camber? How much of a lift was it?
I have autofab coils on my '71 which look to me like they lifted the front-end about 5-6". So i adjusted the toe way out temporarily and it drives perfect. Highways even, it couldn't be better.
So after i bend my beams to fix the camber it will either be just as good or not as good.

No lift. 31" tires. Hey 1971Ford, just curious how much did those coil springs cost ya? Would you recommend them? I have a left over '69 swb frame that I wanna make a desert truck and love the Autofab stuff.

Good evening MrTleavitt,

Custom Alignment in Mountain View, California has the equipment and skills to cold bend the I beams. If you're curious to hear their price, just to see if your $140 is reasonable, you could give them a call.

This is probably where I'll take #50 for this once it's on the road.
