Anyway to ID the date on a 351w ?

Post by papabug71 »

Honest to God, I know the question has been asked a bazillion times before. BUT. Does anyone know of a way to ID an engine not original to the vehicle. My 74 parts truck has a 351w in it. The truck was originally a 6 banger truck. I know its a newer 351 (80's or so), it has the grey paint on it & also has the newer style sticker on the pass. side valve cover. Im trying to decide on building it or building my original 302... I have looked all over on it for a decade lettter, but I cant find one anywere. The sticker on the valve cover just has a bunch of random #'s on it.. :hmm:

Any help is appreciated.

i'm, guessing it had a cabr on it and not throttle body or fuel injection intake? that woudl help narrow it down if it had any of those on it. if it is cabr then it would be any where from 82-84 85 then it woudl be close to the era of throttle bodies after that. and then abotu 87 would be fuel injection. these dates are close but not a fact.

there are casting numbers are on the side of the Block where the starter bolts up they should read something like D8TE this code would be for a 1978 ford Truck engine. the first digit is the year of manufactor, B=50-59 C=60-69 D=70-79 E=80-89 F=90-99, the second is the senconddary year code1-9 as above d8 would = 1978, the third is the vehicle it came in A=Ford ,D=Falcon,G=comet, cyclone, montego,J= marine,M=mercury,O= Fairlane, torino,S=thunderbird,T=FORD TRUCK,V=Lincoln,W=couger,Z=mustang. the forth diget is the Division on a motor E= engine group, Some time's you will run into a M in the forth place this can stand for Mexico or SVO Group. Your Heades will have the same casting number set up as well as your intake. Good Luck

I was going to check it out this evening after work BUT....Stupid rain. We got 1 1/2" today. Looks like its going to be a wet fall/winter...

I'll look tomm. after work & let you guys know.

What year did the 351's go to a one piece rear seal?

What year did the 351's go to roller blocks? Or was that a HO 5.0 only deal..?

I think it was 1992 when Ford first used the one peice rear seal and roller lifters I believe the 2 where in conjuction for that year, Ford boosted the HP a little that year I believe Due to the roller conv. and a slightly diffrent cam profile. from 1986 up all the 302 fuel injected where running roller lifter's.

Its a 81' model 351w from a truck. Checked today. I pulled the valve covers off & everything looks clean. Very little carbon if any.

Im highly considering putting it in my 71' & calling it a 302. However, it has alot of CARB & smog junk on it. I think most of it can be done away with, but I did notice a crossover in the rear that goes from head to head. The PO has used a pipe cap & capped it off. What was the x-over? A heat exchange of some sort. My knowledge of smog motors is very limited......

Can you unbolt it & be done with it, or do you have to keep it? It is bolted on the back of the heads with a 2 bolt flange. 2 bolts per head...?

You can take it of and weld the ends up to plug it off but you will need to put the plugged ends pack on. exhaust flows through the tube back into the Smog pump system so if you leave it off you will have a very back exhaust Leak .

You could probably find a correct size freeze plug for the hole or tap and plug them.

If I remember right I took a pipe tap, tapped the larger hole and put a small pipe plug in there. I think it takes air down to the cat.

I dont know if I will be able to get it this weekend or not. It rained, get this, 5 1/2" here last night. The town almost washed away. Not to mention the manhole in the alley flooded & ruined my back yard. I was on the back poarch with a leaf blower trying to keep it from comming in the back door. Desperate times call for desperate measures ya' know.....
