1969 F250 4wd
I just purchased a 1969 Ford 250 4wd. The previous owner told me it had a 360 in it but he replaced it with a 390. I'm trying to change the oil & filter and have been getting different stories on the capacities. I have been told to use 6 quarts and 5 quarts. I initially added six quarts at it looked like it was way too much. I then changed the oil again and added five quarts and this still looks like its too much according to the dip stick. Please let me know.

I have a '70 F250 4x4 390 and I've always put 6.5 quarts in it. Does it have the 4x4 pan on it? It should be a rear sump pan with the dipstick tube about halfway back below the exhaust manifold.

Thanks, sounds right. The dip stick is throwing me off but I guess I can't go off of that because both 5 and 6 quarts look to be too much. And god only knows what the dip stick came from.

The 4x4 pan is bigger than the 4x2 pan. 4x2 pan is 5quarts total ( 4 in pan + 1 for filter) 4x4 pan holds at least 6Quarts. I've always used 6.5 with no problems

How would i know the difference between the 4x2 pan and the 4x4 pan. The vehicle is a 4x4 but i dn't know if this guy ever changed the pan. The dip stick is about 1/2 way and below the manifold. Thanks.

the 4wd pan has the dip stick coming out of the pan. the 2wd pan has the dipstick coming out of the lower side of the block.

Actually I have a front sump pan on the truck. There is plenty of clearance but when the old owner changed the engine he prabably changed the pan. I talked to a ford dealership and they told me to put six quarts in it, another sevice station told me to put 6.5 quarts in it. I have heard everything from 5 to 7 quarts. I put six in it and hope for the best.

pan depth and dipstick location is your determining factor. if the dipstick is in the block 6 a little too much i think. for a front sump pan. when i put oil in my 4wd i am goign to buy 7 because i will probably need about 1/2-3/4 a quart for the new filter too. unless i go with the shorty filter. for clearance issues. i have a 2wd oil fitler adapter on my engine. i dont have the 4wd adapter.

Re: 1969 F250 4wd
Well, you got me thinking about taking 1/2 quart out. It is definetly a front sump and the dip stick does come out of the block. Is there any measurement of the pan dept that you know of that would determine amount of oil. you see any problem with what looks like a 4x2 configuration on a 4x4 vehicle. Thanks for any help. Might as well ask you what grade oil you use in your old truck. The previous owner said 10w30, but from the way the oil looked like when I changed it I don't think he really worried about it.

your dip stick should be 18 inches long from the beell on top to the tip on bottom
