AFTERMARKET TEMPERATURE GUAGE ACTING WEIRD

Post by 57fordf100 »

hey guys so today is the first day i took the truck out to a car meet i put in a new temperature gauge oil pressure gauge volts meter and fuel gauge everything seems to be working great oil pressure is about 60psi volts read about 14 fuel is good but the temperature gauge is weird i hooked it up to were the old stock sending unit use to be on the head so i drove around had the truck running and the temperature gauge didnt move for nothing so i said ok i bought a mest up temp gauge but then after i parked about 5 minutes later it starts to move it moved to about 120 and didnt go any higher i was wondering if thats normal temp for the y-block or if its not getting the right readings from were its connected or is the gauge just broke any help would be great guys thanx

i'll start with what i know abotu the generic way most of them work. tthere is an electrode that goes into the block in place of the old sending unit. that leads to the gauge. then i think power goes to the gauge and probably the gauge is grounded to the dash via the bracket or a seperate wire. and then there mightbe a backlight wires fo rpower and ground also. but the light probably grounds through the bracket.the only thing i can think of is the wires are hooked up backwards. or the gauge is bad.

Well it's probably a manual gauge, I have to drive my truck like 5 miles before it even reads. Because it takes a while for the temperature to get higher. But if it's electric, use the unit they give you not the engines unit. Because the factory one could run different voltages/amps. But after you turn it off the temperature raises because the fan is not running to cool it off. So the temperature increases. That happens with any vehicle.

its a manual gauge not an electric one it has what looks like a copper wire wrapped in metal in the end of it has a rod that goes into the motor im wondering if its not getting good readings from the head or if its just a bad gauge

It probably has a fitting that screws into the pipe threads in the block, and a fitting on the end of the tube that is similar to a flared fitting that holds the bulb into the block.

Fill the cooling system with coolant, then loosen the fitting on the tube and wiggle the tube just a little. You should get some coolant coming out around the fitting. Retighten the fitting and refill the coolant.

If you do have an air pocket, this will get rid of it.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!
