Brake pedal height

Post by rlgrantjr »

The brake pedal on my 70 F250 is so high compared to the gas pedal I have to lift my foot off the floor
to brake. I'm sure everyone else has to do this also and with the limited leg room it's a PITA. Has anyone
modified the brake pedal to be closer to the floor? I have a C6 and manual drum brakes and was looking
at how much clearance I have between the floor and the pedal with it depressed all the way. It looks like
I could lower the pedal quite a bit with no problem. I was just going to buy another pedal, cut it in two
and weld plates on both sides to bring down the height. Anyone have a brake pedal they want to sell?

Mine was all the way to the floor because my MC was shot. :o Maybe shorten the rod to the master cylinder or add spacers and move the whole MC away from the firewall. With where the rod is attached you dont need much movement to move the pedal inward quite a bit.

The dentside trucks have a considerably lower brake pedal. It was an advertised feature. Might want to get a pedal assembly and mc/booster out of one of those.

Thought about shortening the brake rod, but if I do it will change the rod
geometry and possibly cause a problem with the master cylinder seals, so
I scrapped the idea in favor of altering the pedal.

if you have access to a welder, that would the way to do imo. do the work lower than the brake light switch and itll be a 15 minute process

how high is higher? In my 67 the mc had been changed and wrong rod put in, my knee almost hit steering wheel to apply brakes. Maybe you have similar situation, anyone close to you have same year truck to compare?

my guess is that your foot isnt of average length. so the brake pedal in your truck seems higher than you are used to. 73-79 brake pedals wont fit in our trucks without some grinding to let it fit into the bracket of our trucks. you could check your brake pedal rod if you like though.

I pulled a pedal from a 73 and put it in my 70. no problem, fit perfect. I believe they changed them in 74 or 75. :2cents:

Now that is funny! My feet are size 11 so I'm fairly sure that's not the problem. I'll check the rod length, but it can't be that far off since the
brake switch is in the right spot. I'm just gonna cut the dang thing below the brake switch and move it where I want it.

IM 6'8" and alot of that is legs and i have never had a problem with the brake pedal height! I would assume someone down the road put the wrong rod in and thats why its giving you problems! Could you take a side view pic of the brake pedal compared to the gas pedal (from the drivers door looking toward the center of the truck) this may help to see if it is at normal height or if yours is higher than it should be!

i was just thinking about this. and i know what the problem is now. since you said you are so tall. there really isnt the correct room for your leg to make the move from the gas to the brake in such a stomping type of move. to move your leg up off of the gas and over to the pedal even higher up closer to the seat. i understand now.

Looks like this thread died before any resolution was found. rlgrantjr, what did you end up doing? Has anyone else experienced and fixed this issue? I'm fairly tall and smacking my knee into my steering wheel is getting kind of old.

with alot of extra work the brake pedal can be moved in the bracket and a shorter rod used. you could even go to a 78/79 booster and rod. if you do the mustang bearings in the brake pedal you can relocate the brake pedal and put it closer to the floor. i am not sure if i have any pics of the way i saw the 78/79 bracket but it was up beyond where the original spot was at.
