My steering column and power steering box doesn't line up!

Post by mrtleavitt »

I can't get this steering box and column to line up! I just had the same combo on my '69 frame and switched it over to the '74 frame and now it won't fit. The cab was squared up on the old frame and it is now on the new frame. I never took the column off when I swapped it. Does anyone have any ideas?

loosen the column up and let it slide over. how are you gauging the squareness of the cab to the frame? is it bolts lining up or did you use another method?

I've measured the frame to the cab in several different spots, so I'm positive that the cab is square on the frame. I loosened the two bolts that hold the steering column to the dash (inside the cab, the first bolts you come to going down from the steering wheel) and I could only pick up 1/8 of an inch which still didn't get the column and box to line up. Are these the bolts you're talking about? Thanks for the input.

There is a plate on the firewall out side that holds the steering column, you should be able to loosen the bolts there and get it to slide over (also loosen the dash bolts). I'm putiing a newer column on my "69" and noticed that the holes in the plate are big enough to move it around.

loosen all of the botls and move it left and right to get it to line up. if it wont go you may have to move the cab over a slight. moving the column should work.

Got it guys, thanks for the help. I ended up loosening all the column bolts and the pedal assembly bolts and that finally gave me enough room to bolt up the joint. I just thought it was weird that 15 minutes before it bolted up fine on the other frame. Just goes to show that in the production proccess no two frames are identical I guess.
