What are the widest wheels/tires that I can put on my truck?
Good evening,
Recently I read a post from Alvin in AZ that made me wonder about wheel and tire width.
What are the widest wheels/tires that I can put on my truck (1972 F250 8,100lb GVW)?
Also, what difference will I notice between the factory width and wider wheels? I can imagine that wider rear wheels would give me better traction (maybe), but what about the fronts? And what are the drawbacks to the wide wheels?
Thanks!
Robroy

I have 295/50/15 on 15x10 wheels on all four corners. I like them better than the stock ones I took off. Just watch out for standing water if you have manual steering.

I have 33x12.5s on the rear of my truck and they will fit on the front as well with very minor rub at full lock.

Hey Iamthewreckingcrew, thanks for replying! I'm not sure what you mean about standing water and manual steering. Do you mean that you'd have to turn the wheel excessively hard with manual steering with larger tires installed?iamthewreckingcrew wrote:I have 295/50/15 on 15x10 wheels on all four corners. Interesting, thank you!Redcap wrote:I have 33x12.5s on the rear of my truck and they will fit on the front as well with very minor rub at full lock.
I've never really paid attention to the numbers of tires before now, so I'm trying to decode "33x12.5" and "295/50/15" by looking at the Wikipedia article on tire sizes. I'm sure I'll figure it out ultimately but any words of wisdom would be really helpful.
Thanks again!

33x12.5 is just that, the size in inches. I try not to deal with the stupid xxx/xx/Rxx metric crap.robroy wrote:Hey Iamthewreckingcrew, thanks for replying! Standing water will try to jerk the wheel out of your hand with manual steering.robroy wrote: Hey Iamthewreckingcrew, thanks for replying!
