drivers front wheel out farther than pass. side

Post by 1971ford »

so a while back i put on new (to me) wheels on the 71. and i noticed when i swapped the fronts and put the new ones on that less stud stuck out from the lugnut on one side than the other.
ok so you dont understand my gibberish, look at the pictures :D
its not just that one side has the little stub on the end of the lug studs (whats the name?) making it look longer, its also has more threads.
drivers side

passenger side, when rim is on and lugnut is tight, the stud doesnt even go all the way to the end of the lugnut, definately too short so this would be the side that is "wrong"

also, the drivers front wheel sticks out more than the passenger front wheel. so i measured everywhere on the rim and measured the tire and there identical, why the heck is the drivers wheel sticking out more? i had to cut my fenders extra on that side to get it to tuck into the fender and not rub.

That second pic looks like the stock studs. All they had to do was pass through the stock steel wheels. The longer ones are probably more modern for the thicker aluminum wheels.

Are your axles the proper ones and matching?

Normal for the driver's side to stick out farther. As far as the studs go, someone replaced one of the rotors somewhere down the line .

axles? this is the front end, 2wd. the aluminum wheels i put on must be the more modern type and thicker.

ok so i shouldnt worry about the studs.

why did the drivers wheel stickout farther from factory? something to do with the engine being more to one side? :?

The rear has a similar off-set. I believe it has to do with fundamental aspects of handling/cornering :?

have you had the front clip off or the body? maybe its an alignment issue with the front clip and or body parts. there was a thread about this a few days ago. i think it was banjo who posted it.

it was me who posted it, Fordman, I think in the body/paint section but I forget. I was shocked my buddy said my truck appears to be dog-tracking from behind (wheels offset) while going down the road and started checking to notice my left front tire (oversize tires here too) was noticeably closer to the driver fender than the pass side. I was particularly concerned because I'd rebuilt entire front suspension and thought my alignment guy had really screwed up, only to find out this is basically normall for bumps. It does give the optical illusion the truck is crooked, even when parked if you truly scrutinize it closely. Someone even posted the dealer recall literature on my post which basically told Ford dealers to tell folks NOT to panic when they come in with complaints of this (if I recall). And, I understand this situation is even more noticeable with oversize tires (as mine are and you mention yours aftermarket also). Banjo from Ala.
