Saginaw power steering box missing bracket

Post by Banjo »

Just noticed on my 68 (checked, it is a Saginaw box, which is leaky), the bracket shown on tutorials isn't there. In the tutorials, there is a metal bracket and it mentions it's stamped "power steering" that mounts to the steering box and bolts to ? Can't tell from photo's what it attaches to. What is this bracket for? Do I need one?
Also, are Saginaws known to leak also? Always figured I had a bendix as it was leaky until I noticed my steering box is the Saginaw version.

I believe what you're referring to is the steering column mounting bracket, which is used to attach the steering column to the outer firewall.

Anything with seals will leak, though the Saginaw box is much less prone to that than the Bendix box.

I can't figure out how to post pic, have new dig camera, but ignorant how to use for most part. This is the bracket on the frame mounted steering box has two holes, is on extreme driver side. Cannot find any spot on cab to where it should mount. As I see it now, my steering column has one clamp on the outside lower edge and is attached to the frame mounted steering box with a rag joint and that is all. But, I see on tutorial pix of a bracket that runs from the steering box toward the firewall, but I cannot tell to what it bolts? I'm curious if I'm putting myself in harms way by driving it without this bracket? Does anyone have a close up pix or can post one of where this bracket bolts to firewall?

(This is a Bendix steering box setup I'm using for illustration purposes only) No. 1 is the steering column bracket that bolts to the firewall. The only bracket bolted to the steering box itself is No. 2 in the above illustration, which is nothing more than a brakeline support bracket. Here's a better view on a Saginaw box:

Thats the way my bendix is. The bracket is for the brake lines.

Thanks very much guys that clarifys it for me, I hadn't even noticed the power steering bracket bolted onto the firewall as a separate peice. At any rate, I'm leaky somewhere I can't locate for sure, it doesn't loose enough to be refilled much (pump), but just keeps that side of the truck messy from what is likely a small spray. I think I'll get a buddy over to work the steering wheel lock to lock several times while I'm under hood with it running with a strong flashlight and maybe I'll better be able to tell from where (or where all) in the steering I'm spraying. The metal power steering lines that run into this steering box are as tight as they can be, as verified by a brake line wrench it was already tighter than anything I can muster up, which is usually enough to break bolts and strip things (unfortunately).
I'm always leary as someone before me converted this truck over from factory straight 6/3 on the column, to small block and since I've caught some places they took shortcuts (errors), I keep finding dumb stuff they did in some places but in other places they did a factory type job. Likely several different pairs of hands through the last 40 years huh? with different skill levels (myself included). Banjo.
