D60 rear wheel seal surface

Post by James72 »

On my '72 Dana 60 rear axle is the seal surface on the spindle replaceable? Mine is bumpy, like someone replaced it and messed it up, it looks like it may be a pressed on collar maybe. I hope so or I have to chuck this axle

you need to put a sleeve on it...
smooth the grooves a bit... cover the grooves with JBweld, them put on the sleeve while the JB weld is still gooey... you want it to fill in the grooves under the sleeve. Then wipe off the excess.

I went to a muffler shop and had them cut and stretch me a piece of exhaust pipe so that I could install the sleeve.... I covered the edge of the pipe so it wouldn't scratch the sleeve...

I don't have the pic here at work... I will try and find it at home tonight and upload it.

HTH,

Eric

If it really comes down to it you can cut the spindle off and weld a new one on. I've seen it done on the truck. That seal surface looks sleevable though.

So the pipe fits on the outside and pushes the flange, not the end?
I've done sleeves on rear mains for Cat engines and the tool pushes on the end. I guess you hust have to be carefull

Yup... that is the same way the vendor supplied 'cup' does it. You are actually supposed to remove the flange, but I never saw the need to on this application... Harmonic balancers are a different story.
