Where all 3 cables link up under the bed, should there be a return spring of some kind? Mine is long gone.

why yes. yes there should

connects to the linkup thing and connects to a crossmember.

i pulled mine off today as a matter of fact :)
i can get a pic of the spring.

OldRedFord, give NAPA a try.They sell universal return springs that you cut to needed length.If you don't have a NAPA store handy look for someone who sells Dorman products. :)

Here are a couple pics I have, which aren't the best but will give you an idea of what they look like.

In this shot, you can see the long spring which extends from the equalizer back to the crossmember:

This picture is a comparison of the two long springs used for the clutch return (lower/left) and the e-brake return (upper/right):
