sloppy 4x4 steering, need joint solutions
So, on the 4x4 the steering is a little loose, and I tracked the problem down to the joint where the steering shaft meets the gear box (right at the front of the box). It's worn and has a lot of play in it, and won't pass inspection that way. Do any of you know what the technical name for that joint is, and if they are still available? Thanks!

It's a steering coupler, or rag joint.
You can get them from a parts store, or you can get one from NPD.

I was thinking that a rag joint was the type with the rubbe disc inbetween to parts of the steering shaft. This one has the shaft going into it at one end, but i guess they call it the same thing...

Here's a pic of the joint. Does anybody know where I can get one, or of something else I can upgrade to?flyboy2610 wrote:Oops. Didn't catch the 4x4 part.

If you take it a part you find the shaft has a cross pin. The Pin holds to square bits of steel that slide in the channel of the cup half attached the steering box.
Inspect it you may get lucky and need only grease. If not you might be able to make something work for your Vehicle inspection.
Not sure if I kept ours will try to look around for it.

re: sloppy 4x4 steering, need joint solutions
I solved it by making one of these from two intermediate shafts and a newer slipshaft.
The u-joints aren't available any longer for the stock shaft, but I found u-joint used for a PTO application that works. I think it was a Precision 830. I can check that number if needed.

Thanks guys! Is a slip joint needed in the steering, or could I just get one of these universal steering joints I found on ebay and use it?

You could use that Moroso joint, it should fit the steering box ok. You will have to figure out a way to attach it to the steering shaft thou.

It is good to have some sort of forgiveness in the intermediate shaft. I got mine slip from a newer F250 ou of a junkyard. I think it cost me $10.fomocoguy wrote:Thanks guys! I'm going to make an early morning run to the junk yard tomorrow. I know they have a 4x4 there, so hopefully it's got a better joint than mine. Either way I can scout for some others I may be able to use...
