Loud Power steering pump, what years are quiet?

Post by cdherman »

I have just finished the PS upgrade to my 65. Kieth and his excellent tutorial was exceedingly helpful.

The PS pump mount for my 240 was from a 77, so I used the 77 PS pump, hoses etc. In terms of steering, the effect is phenomenal. Drives like a 2008. (well kindof)

But the power steering pump is loud. It and the steering gear are both new remanufactured. No leaks and I am nearly certain I have the air out. The noise is a grinding/growling/ low pitched rattle. Sorry for the poor description. But its NOT a whine.

I have read as much as I can via search here at over at FTE  and read that I should have gotten a "saginaw" pump. Or maybe a later 78- up, plastic reservoir pump.

Anyone here have opinions? You know if I can use my 77 mount, or will I need to be looking for that as well?

Thanks in advance....

On the F100, I have the kind with the large diameter filler tube and plastic cap/dipstick, I think called a Thompson type pump. Kinda loud like every other late 70's early 80's Ford product with power steering.

On the F-250, I have the earlier model with the small diameter filler hole and metal dipstick and it is much quieter.

On the F100, I got my mounting bracket from an early 80's Bronco with a 300 CID. I already had a two groove pulley on the crank to power the pump. I have one belt powering the alternator and water pump, with another powering only the power steering. It works great. Sorry I don't have any pictures.

The pump in my '69 is quiet (except when you lock the wheels left or right) but it does have a remanufacture sticker on it so I'm not sure if it's original.

From your description, i'm assuming you have the round, metal reservoir pump. If so, you need to make SURE all the air is out of the system. Run the wheel almost lock to lock, slowly 4-5 times. Do this after the truck has sat for a day or so. Second, use power steering fluid, not trans fluid. Even in those older style pumps, that can help. If you can find some Lubeguard P/S addetive, that might help as well. Unfortunatly, those pumps are inherently noisy. Check your bracket, if this is the 3 bolt mounting, the plastic pump should bolt right in place as well. Lighter, and less hp to run as well

Thompson is a name I have never heard of. I have heard that I need a saginaw pump. And I have read that I must get rid of my saginaw pump!!

I would rather keep the metal drum style pump -- the plasic reservoir stuff looks so modern. Nothing against them, luv em in my 2008. But if I cannot get this sucker to quiet down, well then its outa there!

I have driven it for a couple of days and certainly moved it slowly from lock to lock numerous times.

I am running Mobil One Synthetic ATF in it. Ford calls for Type F. I have read every opinion under the sun about what fluid runs quiet etc etc. Guess it wouldn't hurt to try the Lubeguard addi.

Ummm, That's come to expect for a Ford, lol...I had a pump with the large filler tube and it was quiet when it wasn't leaking and empty...

The Plastic pumps can be painted, and almost disappear.
If you like the metal res. pump, keep it. They can be mabe to work just fine.
As far as lock to lock, this needs to be done slowly. P/S fluid can aerate and deal you a fit, trying to get one to quiet down. That's why i said let the truck set for a day or so, then do the lock to lock thing. As far as Mobil 1atf.......i dunno??
In my stuff, i run Royal Purple synth p/s fluid. Probably overkill, but the stuff works.

once again....

I have had good luck with the Lucas brand power steering additive. Follow directions on bottle. Can get at auto zone. I run it in all my rides. :2cents: :

The Saginaw is the one you want. The round cylinder is the Thompson pump...usually. Take a pic of what you have and post it.

Here is a try at posting an image of the pump. I don't seem to have a gallery account here.

Aha, Correct me if I am wrong.....

The power steering gear that Ford used from about 1968 to 79 is commonly referred to as a "Saginaw" power steering gear (as opposed to a Bendix)?

But the pump that was commonly used in most of those years is a Thompson, design at least. Saginaw made power steering pumps, but Ford didn't use a Saginaw pump, just the gearbox?

So the pump that ford switched over to in 1978, the one that is supposed to run quieter -- What is it commonly referred to as?

Saginaw.

Think P/S pump on most GM's from about 72 up.

and if properly rebuilt/installed the Thompson pumps aren't always noisy.

it just seems that way :D

Since you guys are talking ps pumps. Tell me if it makes a difference if you have a Bendix Box and a Ford Pump? Mine is working great and is very quite. But I read somewhere that they should be the same. What's the verdict?
