installing a power booster for a 67 (warning picture heavy)

Post by SteveC »

Ok not as many pics as i wanted but at least a few to get a idea of what to do when installing a power drum brake set up. If any body accually reads all this let me know how it sounds please

Ok to start you have to remove the bolt holding the push rod. On mine it took a 3/4 offset wrench and a 9/16 socket or wrench.

Image

i had to drop my ac unit to get a good angle to get to the back side of the bolt going through the peddle
Image

Ok you cant see it in the pic but here is the brake light switch with the bolt i just removed from the peddle. There is the bolt a plastic bushing and a plastic ring that fits snuggly over the round part of the bolt towards the head of it. the bolt goes into the stop light switch then the plastic bushing goes inbetween the tabs on the switch and the bolt continues through the tabs where is is head in place by the ring that snugs over it and that bolts to the peddle.
Image

here is a burry(sorry) picture of the push rod that just fell out of the master cylinder when i removed the bolt
Image

here is the old master cylinder you need to remove the 2 bolts on on each side holding the master to the fire wall also need to remove the 2 bolts directly above the ones holding the master to the firewall.
Image

OK looking back it would have been MUCH easier to probally put the brackets on the truck first but i never do things the easy way anyway you can see were this will bolt up as well as how the brackets go on the booster
Image

Ok here is the booster attached to the firewall by the 4 bolts and dad finishing tightning them
Image

one of the last things to do after bench bleeding the master cylinder attach it to the front of the booster and attach the brake lines carefully i had to pull on mine a bit to get them to reach probally a good idea to bleed your brakes as well
Image

and you need a 3/8 inside diameter hose around 30 inches long to go over to the intake manifold you dont need quite that much hose but it never hurts to have a bit extra I circled the spot that is needed to tap into If you have a automatic you will need a brass T fitting to split the vacuum lines if you have a manuel jsut tap in here for vacuum. You could also tap into one of the rubber lines from the auto tranny line but it was to hard for me to reach
Image

OK if i missed anything let me know

the push rod on the end of the booster that goes into the master is adjust-able suprisingly that i got it adjusted almost perfectly by guessing

i was very happy with every thing...i installed it the hard way...the brackets on the booster then to the firewall  never can do anything easy.

On a side note the piece of plastic tubing that was on the original booster that went inbetween the firewall and booster was to long to use with the rubber boot that came on the new booster.. we had to trim it down to fit well with out squashing the rubber boot to much

Is it a big improvement with the booster? I am planning on doing it soon if its worth it.

SoCal,
for my 67 it made a difference, but not a huge difference. But then, I believe the boosters for the 67 are smaller then what you would get for your 69. Was it worth it? Ya, to me it was, as its a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade.

the hardest thing for me was how the brake light switch went back together....and it probally is smarter to probally put the brackets on the fire wall first...

I am glad that i can help people on here..as much help as i get i can only offer so much in return.

If i get a chance and have to/need to rebuild the engine this fall ill take pics of that as well

cool hopefully the booster install goes good. I dont expect the brakes the silverado has but better than having to really push hard on them my legs just arnt that strong:lol: i know how it feels not being able to lift over 20 lbs.. im still on restictions from when i broke my wrist..thankfully it ends next month..

I slipped on ice on the 26th of december...broke my scafiod(spelling?) was told i broke the worse bone to break in the wrist and that it either will not heal and needs surgury or will take months to heal,...thank fully no surgery
